Yeah pretty much.That's a basic definition of staying in key. You can also use reletive scales that have pretty much the sam notes for even more reach down the fretboard. All you do to find the reletive Major scale to Am is count 3 frets up from the root (A) and viola! Cmaj scale. Then it's vice versa to find the relative minor to any Major scale. Try it out and work with it.
