OK, I just inherited a stash of electric pedals…. I have a pedal board I’m designing/building to accommodate them…. and want to know what the best way to arrange these effects in series would be (I know the best answer is to try different arrangements,…. but I have no clue where to even start as I am completely an acoustic guy)

-I have an old American Strat and a mex. Tele....
-I don’t have an amp yet but I am leaning towards a Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue.
-I play stuff similar to John Mayer, U2, David Crowder…….

Let me know your thoughts on ARANGEMENT as I can’t wait to dive in and play with these, but I have no clue about electric guitar stuff (also is there any additional effect you would say is a major gap that I should look at getting long-term?)

Thanks so much! Keith

This is the EFFECT BOX STASH, and my initial series ordering of them.

-AB Switch box
-Boss Tuner TU-2
-Morely Volume Pedal (little allegator)
-Dunlop CryBaby
-MXR Super COMP
-MXR phase 100
-Line6 DL4
-Radial Tonebone Trimode (2 channel tube distortion pedal with lots of control on eq and such)
-Boss Blues Driver (BD-2)
-Boss Tremelo (TR-2)
-Line6 FM4
-Line6 AM4

Major score! :D

1. Don't try to use all of them together - you'll just get seriously tangled up and distracted by all the weird things you can do with the knobs. And several of those pedals are variants of the same thing.

2. Use the A/B switch to send your guitar signal to the tuner or to the effects. This allows you to tune silently, and it takes the tuner out of the signal chain when you don't need it. Later, when you have a better handle on what those pedals can do, you can try setting up two different signal chains built up from different pedal combinations.

3. Start out with just one pedal, and spend some time with it. The 'kid in a candy store' approach will not be productive. I'm not familiar with Line 6 products (I'm an old fart - modelling annoys me no end), but if those are multi-FX boxes, you can use them to find out what sort of patches sound best to you. Then you can reconstruct those patches with individual pedals to get better tone.

4. Have fun! If hooking everything together and tap-dancing on all the buttons brings you joy, then do so. After the novelty wears off a bit, then you can go back to step 1 and sort 'em out.

Some good stuff in here about pedals and how to use them.

As LATS said, this is a personal choice and what ever works for you is the "right way" to set up ! Having said that, a couple of good things to remember are:

Verb after distortion (verb before your primary source of distortion sounds really dreadful, this is good to remember if you are planning on using a pedal os your main source of distortion).

Compression after things that peak out your dynamics (like a crybaby).

Crybabies before distortion (but can go after, will sound very different ....strange "Quacky" tone !!!).

My fx chain (when I have everything in the chain, which is rare) goes..

Guitar, ABY box, whammy, crybaby, compression sustainer, trem, distortion, chorus, phaser, flanger, delay verb, amp

The Radial ABY box lets me hook a tuner up out of the chain (whilst leaving A (fx to amp) and B (desk, re-amp) channels clear) and lets me send a second identical signal off to a different preamp/DI box / pod for recording / plugging into a desk. When recording it can also be used for re-amping (recording the "dry" guitar part incase you discover you are using too much verb or it doesn't "sit right in the mix" later) or splitting a bass so you can run both a DI and mic the amp !

Very handy bit of kit !!

what about a phaser doc??? my phaser after distortion sounds way more extreme....all most too much......it seems to sound right first in line then compression then distortion.....after does not sound bad just way more extreme, personal taste again i guess. ;)

Sounds like a plan to me !!

I generally run my phaser with hardly any distortion (even less if Im recording !) so, if you like it, go for it mate !
