Nocturnus - 'Thresholds' for the technical/shred death metal vibe
Cynic - 'Focus' for a kind of jazzy/fusion death metal thing
Theodore Ziras - 'Virtual Virtuosity' instrumental neoclassical shred guitar dude
Cacophony - (Jason Becker & Marty Friedman) horrible vocals, amazing guitar work, shred/neoclassical

Deadhorse-an early 90's local metal band who had underground success. Although I saw Jack Osborne wearning one of their shirts once. They're one of my favorite bands period.

Like Akira said... I know quite a few people that are into Racer X as well... I think it's mostly something that guitar players get into... because a lot of times you need to play an instrument to understand music that is that technical...

My favorite band/artist that no one has ever heard of is Keller Williams. He's a one man jam band... Does a ton of sampling. Something interesting for people to check out by him is his newest album that he did. With his whole band called Keller and the Keels. Check out their covers of Pink Floyds "Another Brick in The Wall" Becks "Loser" and Tom Petty's "Last Dance with Mary Jane".... they changed the name to "Mary Janes Last Breakdown".... It's a bit of a blue grass/acoustic/jam style of music. It's good to listen to when you're chillin or hanging out with friends. It's fun type of music. Also check out his songs by the titles of

Moving Sidewalk
Freaker by the Speaker
Blazeabago
Breathe
Best Feeling
Gate Crashers Suck
Balcony Baby (a live improv)

I've seen him live twice and the guy is an improv genius with loop pedals. It's different... and I like it.

I'm also going to add a Blues artists by the name of Joe Bonamassa... It seems like the majority of the guitar community has been neglecting him for far too long. He's a young bluesman that bridges the gap between the new school and the old school... He's downright brilliant. I've turned a few people onto his work since I've been here... I think more people should check him out.

And while we're on young bluesmen Aynsley Lister

He's cool too.... Theres alot of Bonamassa's stuff that I find a little cliched, but his volume swells are amazing - sounds like he's playing a violin....

Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show. Fairly known in the 70's but never got the play they could have.

Screaming Headless torsos

A band I only saw once on MTV like 3 am, saw thw video and loved the music, after that never heart of then anymore...

War Kabinett

Local band from Mexico, you can get them out of there they are more upcoming band of students from Fermatta School of music (now working with Bearkley School), check them out in www.myspace/warkabinett. Gotta say Maelstorm Satan reminds me of Dimebag, I don't like vocal work, and some keybords are way too much, but the rest is awesome, killer live act.
Power corrupts. Absolute power is kinda neat.

I agree... most of his mainstream release stuff is cliche. His best stuff is his live jams. His improv is amazing.

For anyone who may be interested, He's on the guitarist DVD from last month I believe - should be on US shelves now. It's an improv and a bit of a lesson - might be worth a look...

I have a habit of liking someone when they're obscure, but then they go mainstream and everyone knows about them, so they're not obscure anymore. Ah well, here's a list of artists who still aren't all that well-known:

Lincoln Brewster
Thomas Blug
Sarah Harmer
Iron Horse

My 6th grade teacher has a band called Knuckleduster that I think is pretty awesome.

Also, there was this girl playing acoustic guitar in a coffeehouse in Winnipeg that I saw last year. She was singing these really oddball songs in a very unique and strange singing style. I loved her to death, but I have absolutely no clue what her name was. I think it was Melissa something.
