I am thinking about purchasing the Marshall MG 100HDFX half stack and am wondering if it would suit my taste. I play mainly classic rock and classic metal. Bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Cream, Hendrix, Rush, Iron Maiden, etc. If anyone has this amp or knows a lot about it, please give me the pros and cons about it.

Peace

Most people either love it or hate it. I only have experience with the tiny Marshall mg10cd, which sounded amazing for what it was. I highly suggest you play one yourself, and don't listen to what anybody else says, because it's only going to be their opinion, and everybody has different tastes in tone.

Personaly, I would save up a bit more and get a Peavey Valveking head or wait until the Peavey Windsor head comes out (which is even cheaper than the Valveking). I've got the Valveking 112 combo, and it kicks much ass.

But again, try before you buy, and don't be pissed if you hate the tone of the amp ou get, if you buy it based on what someone else says.

a lot of ppl don't like the Marshall MG series because it's like they're capitalising on their name to sell products for more than their worth. ie a MG100HDFX might sound as good as another 100 watt solid state head but be a few hundred bux more (i personally wouldn't get an ss head for that much).

I'm not sure about the head but the 100DFX is a nice amp with a bitchin tone. I used one recently in the studio for the first time ever, always went DI before with my Mesa gear. To tell you the truth, next time I'll go back to Mesa for rhythm (it has so much more balls) but use the 100DFX for lead. Being solid state it has an incredibly tight feel which is really noticeable on high speed solos. I find that tube gear has a negative impact on realy fast palm muted runs because of the 'sag effect'. One thing about this amp is that you will only hit the sweet spot when it is cranked to at least 75%... and that is very loud... not ideal for playing at home.

personally, I would rather go with a tube combo...and from what Playa has posted sound-wise I would look carefully at a Peavey Valve King...looks and sounds pretty amazing for the price.

If I were you I would go with a combo, right up until I planned on using the head I bought forever...or at the very least a good few years.
