And i mean a beginner.

Ambitious! I started with "Horse With No Name" by Neil Young (two chords) - but if you want to start with "Nothing Else Matters", more power to ya!
"It's all folk music... I ain't never heard no horse sing!"
- Attributed variously to Leadbelly and Louis Armstrong

If at first you don't succeed, you are obviously not Chuck Norris.

I started with purple haze.

It's been so long I can't remember exactly what my first song was... But I think it might of been "Outside" by Aaron Lewis... the solo acoustic version... I also remember learning "Glycerine" by Bush very early... "Nothing Else Matters" was the first song that I was actually proud of... It was the first intermediate difficulty song that I learned all the way through... and learned all the parts for as well... I would aim for a more chord oriented song though. There is more technique involved in playing "Nothing Else Matters" the correct way than a lot of beginners realize... But you can always give it a shot!!! It's good to challenge yourself. Good Luck!!

Well, i reckon i have the intro and rhythm thing "nailed".

I'll spend tomorrow playing with the recording.

The solo is way harder than it looks. Not the fingereing per se, but the timing of some parts looks different on paper.

OK, that made no sense at all.

As I recall,"Nothing Else Matters" is in the key of Eminor.Rather than spend your time trying to "nail" the solo note-for-note,I would suggest you spend that time learning Eminor, and why Hammett plays the solo the way he does as opposed to how.I'm pretty sure the whole solo is a mish-mash of Em pentatonic minor and Eminor melodic minor, learn those scales all over the fretboard and almost any Metallica song is within your reach.

I think the first song I learned was Baba O'Reilly by the Who. I never learned it completely, though, because I don't really like the song.

Black Sabbath is a little easier than that Metallica song, imho. You can work on the rhythms and work your way up to the solos. The We Sold Our Soul for Rock-N-Roll tab book is fun to play.

If you want to start with Metallica, the Kill 'Em All tab book is their easiest to me. Seek and Destroy is pretty cool and fun to play.

Minor correction... Hetfield wrote all the guitar parts and plays the solo both on the recording and live... But you're right... he uses Em Pent scale... The solo is the (I suppose arguably) easiest Metallica solo there is... so It shouldn't be too tough.

Really? Wow, I didn't think James played lead guitar at all, I'm impressed. And I've always been saying that "Nothing Else Matters" is one of my favourite Kirk Hammett solos!

Yeah, I picked up a DVD called "Classic Albums: The Black Album". They interview the band and talk about how they wrote all the songs and how they recorded them... it's really interesting. Hettfield wrote the song for himself and never intended for it to be a Metallica song... Then he ended up writing all the guitar parts including a strings part with an Ebow. The DVD is pretty interesting and they show you a lot of the original demos for the songs from the Black album. Cool stuff. I recommend it to any Metallica fan.

hetfield been playin guitar way longer then hammet though, and hetfield is a pretty amazing guitarist, but if anything i'd say he's the heart of metallica, hammet is pretty damn technical and can do some amazing things, but if you had to say why metallica has had the impact it has and why it has pumped out classics that are just bloody amazing (master of puppets is awesome) i'd say hetfield is a pretty major part of the how and why. hammet trained under satriani and started when he was 15 i believe, hetfield played from when he was onli lil.

i'm 17 and i've only just started, but then again i don't think i could have started any earlier because it just wouldn't have connected with me. guitar is like an awesome exploration of myself and i just wasn't open enough as a kid to have been able to take advantage of it.

? the black album was classic! well in a popular mainstream kinda way. The first 4 albums (my fav being Master of Puppets) were way more classic in a metallica followers pov though.
