I have a job for you
Okay, I'm getting everybody I can to make up lists of good songs we should play at this dance. When I say good I mean, you know, good. Well anything you can think of you would want to hear played at a dance, we'll sort it out from there. I especially want female input on this, but you fellas are welcome to give ideas, we really need them. Anything you can dance to, fast or slow. Fire away!
# 1
I would just like to add that it shouldn't be too hard. This dance is gonna be like, a few months away, tops, so no crazy-as-piss guitar solos, please.
# 2
Personally I've always thought it'd be pretty cool to hear something like Hammer Smashed Face at a school dance.
The Gods Made Heavy Metal, And They Saw That It Was Good
They Said To Play It Louder Than Hell, We Promised That We Would
Hulk Smash!!
Whatever you do, don't eat limes. A friend of mine ate a lime once and BAM!! Two years later. Herpes.

I like the way you think, dude. "Sultans of Swing" is one of my favourite songs.

If you have that song could you e-mail me the mp3? I can't find it to listen to anywhere. I'm afraid of what it might be, but I'll give it a listen.

Okay people, keep the ideas coming. We have three possibilities now. That simply won't cut it.

yall might need a second lead guitarist. some of those songs require more than a guitarist, bass, and drummer

When I've done shows in the past that were dance type atmospheres... mostly frat parties and stuff of that sort... I've done a lot of Sublime. What I Got, Santeria, Wrong Way, Pawn Shop (As an intermission type song) and I've even had a Spanish speaking friend sit in and sing Caress Me Down... Most people known those songs... try to target the sings to what type of crowd you're going to have... Sometimes you have to play songs that you personally hate... just to please a crowd... Like... anything punk. Sometimes you have to play a Sum 41 song if that's what's getting the crowd jumping around... or sometimes you have to go with an acoustic Dave Matthews song if the atmosphere is a little more chill.
I don't know what your crowd is going to be... but alls I know is if it's a college crowd you can't go wrong with any kind of 80's music like Pour Some Sugar On Me, Livin On A Prayer... even Beat It by MJ gets the crowd going... Or Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Jason Mraz... etc... college crowds like that acoustic stuff most of the time too...
Some other suggestions... Queens of the Stone Age - Go With the Flow, Little Sister, No One Knows.
Beatles - Come Together
Bush - Machinehead, Glycerine
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit (One of those songs that you may hate but people will still get into)
Well... Hope I gave you some more stuff to think about.

capella and earthman what type of music do you think the crowd will like? what are they into? whats popular? dont pick some really hard classic song if it sounds boring to them. do a simple modern one if you must.

Well, if you want people to dance, I'd recommend 'take me out' or 'do you want to' by franz ferdinand.
I'd also recommend 'all my life' or any foo fighters song.
What else...'juicebox' or 'you only live once' by the strokes'.
Ha, my band does a just for fun cover of 'what is love' by haddaway, you can't not dance to that tune.
'Listen to the music' or 'Long train running' by Doobie Brothers
'New Orleans is Sinking' or 'Poets' by The Tragically Hip
I might add more later. Hope this helps. Just promise, promise me you wont play Good Charlotte, Blink 182, or Sum 41.

For life is quite absurd and death's the final word, You must always face the curtain with a bow
Forget about your sin - give the audience a grin
Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow.

The crowd is going to be a bunch of high school kids. Most of them are probably into Sum 41 and Three Days Grace kind of stuff but I'm sure many like classics too. But just give me anything you can dance to, anything at all. We'll work it out from there.

Well... I haven't been in the "High School" scene for quite awhile.. but I was out recently to a club and they had this band there that played pretty mainstream rock.. and the dancefloor was always packed. The crowd to seem to really like it.
Now if it will appeal to a bunch of kids at a high school dance.. well you would know more than I.
They played songs like....
Collective Soul - Heaven let your light shine down
Metallica - Enter Sandman
Alice in Chains - Man in the box
Green Day - When I come around.....

Great works are performed, not by strength, but by perseverance.

I SAID MAN IN THE BOX!!! Okay we are definitely playing Man in the Box. Enter Sandman and Shine are possibilities. But I will not play Green Day, unless it is Hitchin' a Ride.
EDIT: earthman says he won't play Hitchin' a Ride. Everyone, force him!

A great rock song to dance to is "Kick Out the Jams" by the MC5 (also covered by Rage Against the Machine). I don't know whether you'll be allowed to swear, so you might have to cut out the cry of, "Kick out the jams, motherf***ers!" at the beginning.
I seriously suggest considering an ABBA cover! They're easy songs, great to dance to; and you two are funny guys who ought to be able to get the crowd going. If it's just the three of you, "Mamma Mia" may not be a good idea; perhaps "Dancing Queen"?
Other good ones:
#"Roll Over DJ" and/or "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" by Jet (the ladies love this band)
#"Ballroom Blitz" by Sweet (disco classic, plus the comedy factor)
#"You Shook Me All Night Long" by AC/DC
#"I Wanna Rock and Roll All Night" by KISS
#"The Hand that Feeds" by Nine Inch Nails (easy to play, ought to please the goths and the techno fans, and it'll remind the crowd that you're still living in the same decade as them if you've been playing any seventies songs)
# "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath (maybe too long a song for a disco gig, but I was just thinking that it's manageable for a guitar-drums-bass trio, it rocks, it's danceable, and it gives you all the opportunity to show off with the drum fills and guitar solos...)

"It's all folk music... I ain't never heard no horse sing!"
- Attributed variously to Leadbelly and Louis Armstrong
If at first you don't succeed, you are obviously not Chuck Norris.

I was thinking 'War Pigs,' because I know most of it, but I would still need to practice the solo, which is good, for it will keep me focused. And I know a lot of KISS songs, what with my brother being a fan and all, so that's a good idea too. Thanxorz!
