I tried going to a bar again tonight. It sucked. I had no idea what to do. The counter was so crowded that I couldn't get within 3 meters of it, all of the tables were taken, and all I could do was stand around looking like an idiot for a minute until I said f*ck it and left. I have no friends who drink so I don't know anyone who frequents any bars so I figured this forum might be a good source for advice. What the f*ck do you do? How do you procure and enjoy a drink in a bar? How do you relax when there isn't even a place to rest your feet?

I loves me wild turkey 101. It's drinkable in a 6oz glass like wine if you have any testicular fortitude. It has an excellent fresh out-of-the-oak flavor, it has a pleasant balance of warmth and woody richness, and it has a long and patriotic heritage. I need a motorcycle.

I was hoping it wouldnt be so obvious.

Yes, I'm way past the point of legal intoxication.

Amazing how quickly one learns to type well when one can't even walk to the bathroom (2 ft. from my bedroom door) steadily.

Edit: I just want to say for the record that the band Incubus is awesome whist enjoying bourbon. I'm talking like on the supernatural level awesome.

I've never heard any Opeth, but they sound like cool cats.

I'm going to go see what Dream Theater and Children of Bodom sound like whilst tipsy.

There's usually a queu, often demarcated, where you stand there and wait for the bartender to look at you and ask you what you want. If there's no visible queu, just wedge yourself between two skinny people and lean against the bar while training your eyes on the bartender. They'll eventually look back at you.

Always tip. For mixed drinks, about a buck. If it's straight or on the rocks and you have several in a row, slap down a couple bucks when you're done... position it so everyone knows it's a tip so someone won't grab it.

If the bar has (a) cocktail waitress(es), all you gotta do is sit down at a table or, barring that, stand around and look bored and anxious, and one will hit you up before long. I like those bars better because I'm lazy and don't like getting up or waiting in line...

...and because in Las Vegas, the prettiest girl at your old high school would have one hell of a long line to stand in if she wanted to be a cocktail waitress at a bar/club on or near the Strip... and that's after she got her implants done. Off the Strip where us locals dwell, and excluding lowdown redneck dives (there's plenty of those, too), she'd be good to go lookswise but would have to get visible tattoos, lip rings, and would still need implants.

Gotta love this town! :D

Did I also mention many bars are open 24/7, there's absolutely positively no such thing as "last call" unless the bar isn't open 24/7, you can drink legally on the streets, and some places will give you cocktails in to go cups?

They call it "Sin City" for good reason.

Massive Edit: Does anyone know how much bar gigs pay for local bands?

Reminds me of the people who say rock 'n' roll kills plants but classical makes them happy.

Even gothic techno sucks, for the most part. Although there is this stuff called "IDM" (Intelligent Dance Music) that's really unorthodox and interesting.

Four Tet, Telefon Tel Aviv, Squarepusher... look 'em up . You wouldn't hear this kind of stuff in 98% of clubs unless it was full of overeducated European bohemians or something.

The main problem here is that by state law no establishment can serve alcoholic beverages past 2 AM. I don't think there's any legal limit to bar hours, but sales hours are strictly restricted.

I don't know WHAT you're talking about.
You go outside and practice screaming. We'll play music while you're gone.

Yes, I understand the words. I just don't see what they have to do with anything.

Does anyone here feel like responding to the original subject? This is going to bug me until I get an answer.

OK - we discussed this a little last night - but if you want an answer...

Welcome to the world of Bars on the weekend - no one that I know every goes to a bar on the weekend to relax... They go to have fun....

I went to out last weekend to a local bar here called Pogue Fido.... They usually have live bands on the weekend and I wanted to see this one.. Well like always the place was jammed.

You squeeze your way in find a place at the bar - you have to be assertive and don't be afraid to get close to someone - most of them a drunk anyway and they aren't going to care.... get a drink and then find a spot to stand - I usually make a bee-line straight to the dance floor close to the stage and let loose...

You go there to have fun - there is no written law of etiquette, no secret password. You just go and have fun... Remember that most people in a bar late on a Friday night is half buzzed anyway...

I don't know what else to tell you. If it gives you any consolation - last weekend I was dancing and this guy just comes up and starts dancing with the bunch of us - we didn't care, we danced with him - he was in his glory dancing with four women... We didn't take him home or anything - we just danced - and it was fun... I think his name was Rob, but I can't be sure - the band was playing Metallica at the time and people were screaming I think.. :D
Great works are performed, not by strength, but by perseverance.

I thought I did.

As for bar gigs... anywhere from nothing to a small cut of the drink sales... or door sales if there's a cover charge. Sometimes you might get a flat fee. Sometimes you'll be lucky if they allow people to throw spare change into your guitar case.

If you're, like, a working musician at a jazz club or a studio space or something that's a different story... one that I won't tell here. Being a "Lifer" isn't easy unless you have celebrity status within the industry and have even been heard of by ordinary music fans. But anyways....

If you're talking about rock clubs like in L.A. (i.e. the Whisky or the Roxy on the Sunset Strip) and sizeable-enough cities (Vegas barely seems to qualify, though it has budding potential; no, System of a Down playing at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in front of a bunch of tourists does not count as a 'local scene') you have to guarantee that you'll draw a sizeable enough crowd for them to make $$$ (or else you'll never play the joint again), and often you have to hit the streets and sell the tickets yourself (usually to people you know or, at best, friends of friends of friends, etc.). I guess a lot of bands have been benefitting from this MySpace.com thingy and have been drawing in people that they wouldn't normally come into contact with on the street or in the scene.

But even in L.A., most the bands I knew were constantly grousing about the dismal cut they'd get from playing the clubs. I guess the higher up you are on the scene totem pole, the less you get screwed. Although L.A.'s pretty cutthroat... maybe they're kinder and gentler in somewhere like Omaha or Austin or something.

If you're taking your band on tour you'll be living off of 30-cent hamburgers and will be hoping that you can make enough money to have enough gasoline to make it home. A lot of old punks say the reason that the Ramones died off is because of all the horrible food they had to live off of back when nobody but a few thousand weirdos in New York, Cleveland, Boston, Los Angeles, and London knew who they were. As in, way substandard even by today's typical American diet.

If you stick around locally, as the Ramones did for their first couple of years... let's just say it won't cover your band expenses, let alone make anyone a living. Unless you want to live on the streets or in abandoned buildings like some of the Ramones did, or like three out of four of the Sex Pistols did. Those guys were pioneers in that virtually nobody in New York or in London attempted to live off of ultra-marginal rock music endeavors in the mid-1970s. You were either a hobbyist playing popular covers in bars full of normal people on the one hand or you were a working professional or a star.

But even today, it is a struggle and you have to be committed if you want to get anywhere that even resembles anywhere.

Things might change if you ink yourself a record deal, though if it's with an indie, chances are you won't even be able to save up for retirement on what you'll be making, let alone feed a kid... you'll be lucky to make rent. As for a sizeable or major label... don't get your hopes too high up unless your first single shoots to #12 or something or unless you garner a die-hard cult following that packs theater-sized venues in almost every town you hit. If neither of those things happen they'll neglect you and eventually jettison you.

Ah... but we can dream, can we not? :D
