Are there women for example which really small hands which can play difficult solos? I'm not aware of such a case. Actually I don't know any good female guiarist which plays complex solos. :confused:

In order to be a good guitarist who can play more than just chords does finger length matter? Especially for solos and stuff. I think that finger length and range plays a role, what do you think? :confused:

finger length in a way plays a part, although it's finger flexibility that is the most important. I have HUGE hands, but when I was starting I could barely stretch them to play a power chord. I personally know people (girls especially) with small hands who can play the guitar quite well.
If you have small hands, I recommend getting a guitar that has a slightly smaller neck, such as a les paul.

After years of practice though, you learn to compensate and come up with other ways of doing things.
Your fingers will also be capable of stretching further after a couple of years.
Get a small neck guitar and just keep at it. It's the dedication to learning and hours of practice that make the difference.

Hi everybody!
I have searched a few guitar forums for "short fingers" and there were a few scary threads where people wrote that they have been told that they have too short fingers to play guitar and such stuff. This is scary. Also my grandmother told me her fingers were too short to play piano. :eek: :(
And my fingers are also pretty short, this really angers me. :(

But I have been playing for years and cannot really stretch further maybe you cannot really improve much stretchwise. Maybe this is simply limited. :confused:

You learn to compensate for it...there is always an alternative way of playing any lick...
I have short fat fingers...like 5 baby seals attatched to my knuckles...but I manage to cope.
finger length does matter alot more at first...but like everyone has been saying...if you cant move them nicely, long fingers are just as useless as short fingers

I have an Ibanez RG 270 and especially at the higher frets I find it hard to reach the lowest string with my pinky. I guess I couldn't play a LP for example which has a wider neck. :(
But on the other hand a LP has a shorter neck, too. This is stupid. Shorter neck would be better but at the same time the neck shouldn't be wider than the neck of a RG.

theres always lita ford from the runaways (and various other projects) who was a hell of a guitar player, or you could try (though i'd recommend against it) the great kat (urgh!!!)

Like anything else in music, it's all in the practice. Some things do come easier if you have big hands tho. Look at EVH as a prime example. The guy has huge paws. It's gonna be a lot easier for him to do do spread finger fretboard gymnastics. OTOH, it's probably tougher for him to cram his fingers side by side.

pick a guitar with a smaller fretboard i guess..i have played several guitars and i realised that some are wider than others...thats why i always go for smaller fretboards...like my ibanez gax70 and my yamaha f310p...i have really small fingers too...then again, im relatively small in size...i had issues with stretching too..practise and u'll be fine...

It's been my experience that your fingers will "stretch" a bit as well. My fret fingers are a bit longer than my pick hand fingers are. The flexibility part has been mentioned, and is a good point. It wouldn't matter if you could reach 10 frets from one position, if you can't hit the notes your after.

Somebody in another forum thinks that I'm a fake cause he doesn't believe me that I'm 24 because he says those aren't the hands on a 24 year old. :(
This proves my theory that my fingers are really very short and my hands are also pretty small this looks really stupid. Actually my hands really don't look "old" they look like the hands on a 13 year old. :(
