It matters more when you first start because you might not be able to follow directions that other people use to play.
After years of practice though, you learn to compensate and come up with other ways of doing things.
Your fingers will also be capable of stretching further after a couple of years.
Get a small neck guitar and just keep at it. It's the dedication to learning and hours of practice that make the difference.
