How do you play?
I was just wondering, How many people here play notes, and how many play by ear? I play by ear myself, although I never had the opportunity to learn notes. Now that I found this website, I might try to learn some.

Mostly by ear 'cause I haven't learned the notes themselves.
I am a constant evolving music machine. Oh Man, I just forgot what I was playing. Oh well, on to the next song.

Learning tab and standard notation are good ideas but learning to play be ear will definatly help out a lot. I say do all three. :)

 notes, we don't need no stinking notes.......what do you want notes for??? I just wanna rock :D
I remember when I was a kid my dad took us to hear some guy at a church who was about blown up in Vietnam and had a prosthetic ear that when people would ask how he played piano, he actually removed the plastic ear and started banging on the keys with it.......what a thought........
I play by ear (not literally, I use a pick), but recommend learning how to read sheet music, our keys player has given me some basic instruction and it's helping.

I taught myself by learning tabs, can pretty much site read those now. Never did bother with learning to read notation. But now I play by ear b/c learning by tabs developed my ear.

When I took lessons with Moses, Noah and Melbay.. Sheet music was big. but of course there was not much sheet music on those Hendricks, Led Zep. Clapton leads, so you had to figure those out by ear.. But today with things like guitar pro and guitar port you get the best of both worlds... you get the tabs with the music notation so if you can read you can really get the timing down.. With you ear you can get that just right squeel or bend.. So I call it ear-tab....

It's a good idea to learn both.
Reading tabs and notation has it's advantages sometimes, but you need to develop your ear by learning music from recordings and figuring them out for yourself.
You wouldn't believe how many emails we get asking us to tab out the simplest basic chord songs showing which direction to strum and what notes to hold down. It's kinda like... "why can't you just listen to the recording and figure it out for yourself??"
You need to practice listening to recordings and figuring stuff out by ear or you'll never learn how other people play things.

I try to play by ear, I'm better at figuring out 1 or 2 string riffs then I am at figuring out exactly which chords were used. unless it's just power chords, those are pretty easy to figure out. and when it comes to arpeggios, I'm completely lost.. lol
but alot of the time I do figure out what to play by using scales, etc. to figure out which two notes are gonna sound good together. so, I do both I guess..
btw, when I first opened the page, it didn't let me vote.. it just showed me the current results... and I haven't already voted.. I thought that was kinda wierd.. [edit] nevermind, I guess it turns out the poll closed 2 hours ago.. lol [/edit]

You can close a poll after so many days. Must've been what she done.

I can read manuscript and tablature, but I prefer to play by ear. I play a fair bit of art rock and free jazz - I don't like rules and restrictions in music lol
