It's a good idea to learn both.
Reading tabs and notation has it's advantages sometimes, but you need to develop your ear by learning music from recordings and figuring them out for yourself.
You wouldn't believe how many emails we get asking us to tab out the simplest basic chord songs showing which direction to strum and what notes to hold down. It's kinda like... "why can't you just listen to the recording and figure it out for yourself??"
You need to practice listening to recordings and figuring stuff out by ear or you'll never learn how other people play things.
