Ill vote for Hammett but Ill tell you why. Noew Im not a Metallica fan, not by a long way. I reckon its pretty obvious that Vai is by far the more skillful guitarist but I really don't like his playing I mean its unbelievable but I cant stand all that wanking **** he does. take FTLOG for example, its got a good tune, great song but I just think all the mental stuff he does ruins it. Hammett is a technically very good guitarist though not near as good as Vai but he plays alot more melodic stuff(although Ill never forgive Metallica for what they did to Whisky In The Jar. I mean that idiot Hetfield doesnt even know the words).

I vote Hammett although it pains me to do so. But Im making a point.

I actually expected Kirk Hammett to win that one, although I'm extremely glad he didn't. Vai wins.

Jimmy Page

i would suggest for the next rounds you should draw the name of the guitarists and not choose who's going to fight whom, it will be more interesting that way because there be will fights between guitarists with different style

To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense. After three years of playing I tried to play everything as fast as possible and that sounded, I would say, like shit, and I didn't realize that if I'd play bit slower things than I was capable of playing then everything would sound much better.

Although Harrison is probably the most underrated musician let alone guitarist ever having lived in Lennon and McCartney shadow for so long but for guitar ability and Stairway To heaven Page wins.

i dont think Harrison was that good anyway...
i dont think in the mid 60 there were any good players at all, or at least there was a very little amount of them

THIS WILL BE A BATTLE OF OPINIONS. SURE YNGWIE IS TECHNICALLY BETTER BUT GILMOUR HAS DONE A LOT MORE FOR THE INSTRUMENT.

While I do enjoy Malmsteen's insane shredding from time to time, David G is just awesome in the phrasing and emotion department.

To use Stratman's wording, it's impossible to say how much Pink Floyd's music has influenced my life.

Glimour!

Yngwie's very good but Gilmour has my vote.
By the way, if this is the final match of the first round, what happened to Peter Green or the Edge? I know their talent is somewhat controversial but if George Harrison made it to the list for his creativity, I believe these guys deserve more.

This is probably the most difficult choice Ive seen in this contest. We all know Yngwie is about blindingly fast perfectionist in both technique and plain talent. Gilmour's guitar work with the Floyd brought light to emotional darkness per say. Gilmour has much more depth than Ynwgie and can probably inspire a rock to roll over by itself.

But then again, what is this? Musician wars? oh wait this is a GUITAR war.
Yngwie could Axe Gilmour into bits :D

David Gilmour

Malmsteen does not have a better technique than Gilmour,
unless you are thinking of speed as the main element of technique.
Do you think that bendings and vibrato aren't techniques??
Just listen to Sorrow from P.U.L.S.E.
Who is techniqually good enough to play the into?

AS regards my previous comment about Led Zep (borrowed by Christoph), the same applies to Floyd. I think that emotionally Gilmour is the best guitarist i ever heard, but Yngwie is obviously miles faster. However, i consider both these elements essential to a guitarist, so i must go into the music. However they are diffetent types of music, and while Gilours is much more intricate, its not as dramatically stunning as Yngwies. However, Yngwie has a tendency to take the guitarists penchant for a long fast guitar solo too far (i have a ten minute one), while having no real tune or theme. While songs like Black Star and Far beyond the sun are brilliantly written and not like that at all, i have to say that he widdles far too much. Therefore

DAVE GILMOUR

(that took a bit, didn't it?)

Dave Gilmour.

Musically Yngwie just doesnt impress me.

And if youre lookin for mid sixties guitar gods try Jeff Beck & Hank Marvin. 2 of the greatest guitarists ever.
