new guitar
I'm considering buying a new guitar in the next year, so im starting to do a little research. Im looking into the gibson sg faded, or a lower end strat say probably under 700. I currently play a squier so im used to stratocasters. What guitar would you all recommend for this price range and style. I can upgrade pickups and other electronics. I just need to kno all my options so i can make the right choice. Also what have you all's experiences been with ebay or second hand guitars. If i can convince my mom of it being a safe buy. It will really open my options ;)

Ebay = tricky.
What are you looking for in a guitar? What will you be using it for? Do you prefer HH, SSS, SSH, or SHS? How long are you planning on using it before buying your next guitar?

I need something with sweet warm tone for a little jazz, classic rock, blues, but also can handle distortion. For now ill be using it for practice to hone my skills. When and If i start gigging ill be buying something high end with my own money! ;)

but all in all, I love mine, it's a great guitar, just as good as the high end gibsons! just without all the features you don't need anyway (it has dot inlays rather then trapezoids, and no pickup covers, and the paint is done in a very cost effective way, making it look even better in my opinion) therefore, I recommend a faded sg, if you heard a sound clip of one right next to a sound clip of a higher end gibson, you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference!

I don't like SGs, but it does sound like gibson (or a decent knockoff) is what you're looking for.

make sure to play everything in teh store too and find something you like...don't just take our suggestions...i'm only so adamant about the prs because the ones i've played on have all been consistantly quality. if you want a nice chunky tone, i'd recommend the p90 model.
but like i said...play on everything.

i haven't played on it but i'd imagine it'd probably be the same as the other SE's as far as quality is concerned.
and what i meant by chunky is that it's a fat tone. it's a really cool median between single coil ring and humbucker fatness.
edit: know what? i'm gonna shut up and let you get out to the guitar shops and play 'em yourself.

gibson for a warm jazz sound?hehe, for 700 and american starts pretty good, but look into other fenders, like the jazzmaster or sumtin, dont no 2 much about em tho...but i play a strat and i get all kinds of sounds out of it

gibsons have a much warmer tone then fenders do. and they are very versatile guitars. when it comes to jazz, a fender or a gibson would work, but for the distorted stuff you're going to want humbuckers. which is why I still recommend a gibson

Just to confuse ya even more, those new, lower priced G&L strats are very sweet, great quaility 450 ish. And I havent played one but I see the new strat type from floyd rose everywhere, its comes in different PU combinations 450 ish as well.
Dont be afraid to stray from Gibson or Fender, there is plenty of other quality stuff out there.
