need advise on tone
I have a garnet 2 channel tube amp with no distortion.I bought a mt2 metal zone which is great for metal but i want a classic rock sound also.I want a tube sound and thought about selling the mt2 and getting the vox cooltron bulldog distortion which covers both metal/rock sounds.or would a ds1 or os2 do the job?i also have an sd1 super overdrive.any input greatly appreciated.

Sounds like your looking more for the overdriven sound than the distorted sound.
Your amp is 2 channel and neither channel offers overdrive? I'm not familiar with the garnet amps....

each channel has a volume/pull bright knob and there is a master volume which can pull out but nothing happens.it gets little distorted when the volume knob is cranked and the master is at 1/4,but its a crackly distortion.

I'm sure you have tried this, but have you tried turning the master all the way up and turning the volume knob down? That generally adds some overdrive...

sorry,my mistake, i guess the amp does have distortion but i was expecting more gain like the distortion on a newer transistor amp.I turned the volume up an used my sd1 as a booster like a tubescreamer and it sounds pretty good.the only thing is the sd1 sounds like crap when used with my little transistor amp which i use for headphones.

That's what I was getting at....to find the distortion on your amp then boost it with the overdrive pedal.
Is the Garnet amp a tube amp? Those overdrive pedals work much better with a tube amp vs. a solid state amp.

That's what I do with my amp, although a little different from you. I set my amp's overdrive channel to get a nice rockish tone and use a MXR ZW-44(somewhat of a copy of the SD-1) to booste into hard rock/metal tones. It's also nice infront of the clean channel to get a little grittyness. I set the pedals level all the way up, gain all the way down, and the tone to taste. It works best when the amp is already cranked enough to really get the tubes pumpin'.

if Dr. Simon were here, he would recommend the Boss OD-20 which can come up with pretty much any distortion or overdrive sound imaginable (as it models many different overdrive and distortion pedals)
