That's what I do with my amp, although a little different from you. I set my amp's overdrive channel to get a nice rockish tone and use a MXR ZW-44(somewhat of a copy of the SD-1) to booste into hard rock/metal tones. It's also nice infront of the clean channel to get a little grittyness. I set the pedals level all the way up, gain all the way down, and the tone to taste. It works best when the amp is already cranked enough to really get the tubes pumpin'.
