I'm self taught. I think it's better when you learn stuff on your own. You could start learning basic scales and chords.

I think I've used pretty much all avenues. I am in favour of taking lessons, as I believe they help iron out issues in technique that might limit down the road, but then I teach as well, so am probably biased!

I still take a lesson each week, but spend around 4 hours a day practicing or playing, so teach myself also. It took me years like schmange to get to a decent level, as there was no internet for me either - just crap books with greensleeves in and stuff like that.

There is no point in taking lessons if the lessons teach you songs - all that takes is time. Learning a new technique, sweep-picking for example, would be easier if you have someone show you that trying to read how IMO...

On how long it takes to learn guitar - I bet no-one who really loves guitar ever feels like they're done learning.....

I never had any formal teaching but listening to and seeing my favourite guitarists taught me more than a teacher would anyway. Just play and listen to the music in your head and try to make it come out through your fingers. Miles Davis was a real snob about anyone who couldn't read music (he's a famous {and brilliant} jazz trumpet player who studied at berkely or julliard or somewhere) then he met jimi Hendrix and wished he could unlearn everything and start from scratch! I know there is nothing that I play that isn't already in a book somewhere but I enjoyed "discovering" it for myself because it has different associations for me. I also know that there are alot of formally taught guitarists out there that play better than me and with just as much love and truth so forget everything I just said and I'll go play guitar which is what we should all be doing. Paco de Lucia anyone?

Ive been playing for about 6 months now and Ive learned everything from tabs. Ive got a few tips from friends who play guitar, but Ive learned all the songs I know by myself. Ive played other instruments for quite a while, so that helps with rhythms and other things.

Don't just stick to tabs though, theres a lot of things you can't learn from tabs. Check out the beginners section here to find some scales and chords.

um, books work, dude. anything you find on the internet, someone probaby used resources from a book or their own experimentation. and what better way to get tips from than getting a book that was written by people who play guitar for a living. its just about getting the right book. it dissapoints me to hear you say that becasue thats kindof a bad outlook on it all, dude. let me put it this way. if you spent a hundred dollars on various books, it would benifit you 10 fold of anything else you could spend a hundred dollars on going towards guitar stuff. a new guitar or amp wont do much if you dont have the knowlege in your fingers and your brain.
