I never had any formal teaching but listening to and seeing my favourite guitarists taught me more than a teacher would anyway. Just play and listen to the music in your head and try to make it come out through your fingers. Miles Davis was a real snob about anyone who couldn't read music (he's a famous {and brilliant} jazz trumpet player who studied at berkely or julliard or somewhere) then he met jimi Hendrix and wished he could unlearn everything and start from scratch! I know there is nothing that I play that isn't already in a book somewhere but I enjoyed "discovering" it for myself because it has different associations for me. I also know that there are alot of formally taught guitarists out there that play better than me and with just as much love and truth so forget everything I just said and I'll go play guitar which is what we should all be doing. Paco de Lucia anyone?
