Hello everyone,

I was wondering how many of you learnt to play the guitar on their own and how long does it usually take? I love the sound of guitars and I love music...but I never learnt anything about music or what so ever, if anyone could help me and tell me what to begin with ? hope someone will give me a few hints and I already made the first step on my own, I bought a guitar !!!

Later

I learn on my own, no teachers just a little help from the internet.
It only took me 7 months to get to a goodish level and then another year or so to improve on it and find out some styles and techniques.
Im not ok. Im not okhayhay. Im not ok.

Im self taught, and so is SRV and Slash. In my experience you can achieve the same results but u gonna have to use a little more leg work to get where u wanna go. More resourceful in finding your material to learn from and some times you need feeback so have a friend who plays.

Well, taken from a dude who's taken lessons from 3 different teachers throughout the years, I can't say it was even substantially beneficial to me. Yeah I learned some things, but nothing that wouldn't come naturally. I learned way more by just jamming with my buds.

i think thats waht i always thought also. the information is out there, and while its nice to have a teacher, its real expensive, and usually for yuppie kids. (no offense to the teacher-taught guys) i think that anyone can reach a level of professionalism nowadays if they want it bad enough. the information is everywehre, we live in an age where you can download any song, find any tab, chat with musicians via the internet, find anything, really. and if all else fails, just get some books and study it like the bible.

yeah, I'm self taught too. There wasn't any web when I was learning so it took years. Kinda wish the web was around cause it woulda speeded things up a whole lot. For the first 5 years, all I could play was a stupid D chord.

It's probably easier to stay motivated with a teacher. I've been playing for two years and so far I'm self-taught, but I'm getting a teacher soon. I think a teacher could help you a great deal when you get stuck. But practicing on your own works well too, if you know how to practice right.

Guitar is difficult - knowing what to play is half the battle.

I'm trying to learn. I haven't been playing for very long though. I've bought some books and read stuff off of the internet. The books don't work very well. Just use resources off of the net.

I took a few lessons when I first started (where I learned some basic chords/songs), but I ended up being self-taught for the most part. Aside from Guitar Tricks, alot that I have learned were either from friends who played the guitar (with whom I'd play) or Musician War (http://www.musicianwar.com).

I think R.Shackleferd made a good point. The best way to learn is to play with other people. Especially if they are better than you. I teach myself and try to play for an hour or so every day. The internet is a great place for info. That being said. There is no substitute for a good jam session with your buds.
I am a constant evolving music machine. Oh Man, I just forgot what I was playing. Oh well, on to the next song.
