hey bud. really, the very very best thing you can do is get a good teacher. way better than any movie can give you. a good teacher can help you with those chords and may give you videos for home use if you ask probably. teachers really are a great resource.

Well, first of all, you want a teacher that really knows their stuff. When I was into two months of my playing I decided to take lessons at school and I figured maybe I could learn something I didn't know before. It turns out that all he taught was stuff I already knew and I was way ahead him. Even hiis advanced classes. He just taught stuff with faster tempos or songs with tempo changes. He wasn't really a good guitar player either. So get a teacher that's very open to questions and knowledgeable in theory, technique....

As far as videos are concerned, I never really used them unless I wanted to get a better understanding of an artist/band's style. But I do recommend MVP Home Videos. I know they have videos for basic playing but I have no experience with them. I've used their In The Style Of series and they were pretty insightful on explaining a guitarists style so I would guess that they're beginner videos would be as good too.

Without a doubt, the Metal Method series. (www.metalmethod.com) The complete basic course opened my eyes and advanced my playing like I couldn't believe. It's called metal method, but it will open you up to many styles.

I read that some people said that you can't learn anything from videos, that's crap. Instead of 30 minutes with a teacher, you can learn from the DVDs and rewind and review over and over and over again until you have it right. Worth every penny to me.

this might be a little down the road, but get troy stetina's guitar series ****. i have a few myself, and i think theyre some of the best stuff out there, at least for lead playing. they have lead guitar primers, which get you used to the scales and ****, and they get up to more advanced stuff with the lead mechanics and advanced metal stuff. i have his funk rock book, his thrash book and his lead mechanics book, and i love them all. good stuff in all of them. ive been playing for a little over 2 years and ive never really had a teacher, ive basically taught myself 95% of what i know through books, online ****, and just ****ing around, and i think ive come real far. most people think i have been seeing a music teacher (i wish) but its just dedication, man.

There are lots of good videos. Don't worry about searching for the perfect one. I have a number and I take the view that if I get a single good point out of a video, its been worth the money to me. But of course you will get more than one thing out of any video. Try Keith Wyatt's videos. He's a good teacher with a very sympathetic manner. I've used his acoustic blues video and his electric blues video. I watched the electric blues one when I was just beginning and found the whole thing difficult. But, as time went on, I got better. You can't use a video as a magic bullet. You use it as a guide, and you practice, play, noodle, practice, fiddle, never let the guitar out of your hands while you're awake. By the time I bought the acoustic blues video I was already a better player and I got a whole lot out of it. Good luck, and don't feel you're on a time table or that if you buy a dud video you taking a step back. It's just a video and you're going to be playing for your whole life! :D

hey i've read all the conversation...i just wanted to point out that i had been learning guitar just by myself, reading tabs and online lessons and stuff, never had any vidoes....i just bought dvds "Rock House Learn Rock Guitar Intermediate DVD" and "Rock House Hands of Steel - Workout Routines for Guitarists DVD". it really opened my eyes about scales and lead patterns(I haven't finished the whole dvds yet) the other dvd which is for routine, it has some great great finger picking exercises. I'll say just go for the dvds it will help u a lot and put as much time as u can to learn guitar. One advice "Start really really slow when u first play any lead pattern or pick up any exercise". Good luck , man ;)
