Well, first of all, you want a teacher that really knows their stuff. When I was into two months of my playing I decided to take lessons at school and I figured maybe I could learn something I didn't know before. It turns out that all he taught was stuff I already knew and I was way ahead him. Even hiis advanced classes. He just taught stuff with faster tempos or songs with tempo changes. He wasn't really a good guitar player either. So get a teacher that's very open to questions and knowledgeable in theory, technique....

As far as videos are concerned, I never really used them unless I wanted to get a better understanding of an artist/band's style. But I do recommend MVP Home Videos. I know they have videos for basic playing but I have no experience with them. I've used their In The Style Of series and they were pretty insightful on explaining a guitarists style so I would guess that they're beginner videos would be as good too.
