i kno how u feel, well if u don't kno squat u might wanna start out by goin to a music store and buyin some begginer books for guitar. just ask someone there to help u and they'll get u wut u need. or u can take lessons if u don't want to teach urself. but if u already no how to play u can search online for greenday tabs or other bands. i'm new to this too, but good luck and welcome

Good way to start. All it takes is practice :)

Find a real human teacher. You'll learn MUCH faster and be less frustrated. And start playing with friends even if (especially if) they are better than you. That way you get human instruction for free!

Whether you choose a book/video/ect. really depends on how you learn.
Don't freak out about your friend being better than you. No matter how good you get, someone will always be better than you.

Yeah, don't worry about how good your friends are. If music was a race then there'd be a lot less ground covered by now because we'd all be stuck up each others' ass trying to top the guy next to us. How you go about learning doesn't matter either. Be it a book or a teacher or just talking to other people, whatever helps you learn easiest and most comfortably is all that matters.

Soad's easiest's song is aerials, you can find the tab here : http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/s/system_of_a_down/aerials_tab.htm ,
remember its drop d tuning, just follow along with the cd to figure out when/what to play. I learned this when i was a beginner and it only took me 20 min to nail.

Dude first of all, chill out- if you have just started no one would expect you to match up to one of your friends who has been playing for a while. And to tell you the truth, learning songs is great but if they dont have the knowledge of music behind it, its worthless. So, instead of trying to learn some songs, learn the chords, modes, scales and all that good stuff, and it will really blow ur friends away that you can go on a half an hour rant about how scales and modes relate to making solos while they wouldnt know the difference between major and minor chords. Remember- you are only learning other artists material, not understanding how it was made and therefore not learning how ot make your own. But thats my opinon, if you still want to just learn songs, this is the site i use-
www.mxtabs.com
And about the Green Day songs, all of thier songs are extremely simple to recreate, and none of thier songs have taken me longer than a half an hour, and most you can make out by ear.
Good Luck!! \m/ :D

And how true a statement that is. I remember giving a friend of mine (who also began guitar before I did) a big ol' headache because he asked me help him increase his knowledge of theory to which I went on a rant of chords and scales. It's cases like that that really show how much you've learned. Remember to never stop learning. If you stop learning you basically stop living.

If you're aspirations are to play bands like, then don't worry. If you practice for an hour a day, you'll be nailing those band's entire libraries in a matter of a few short months.
I'd be worried about freaks like the 13 year old kid who's only been playing a year, but can damn near recreate Vai note-for-note on For the Love of God during the heated part of the solo. That makes me wanna start a help thread, lol :D
Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel.

You will eventley get to what they can play and you might even get better I play an acoustic and I got good with playing basic chords and my dad is going to teach me some scales. It's not what you wanna play it's what you can play. :) :D

although, some friendly and fun(has to be fun) competition is always good as that just pushes you harder...and Willie Adler and Mark Morton from lamb of God agree with me...so nah!

Dude,
I am new to this as well. I agree with what has been said; learn it whichever way works best for you. Remember, every single person playing has had a first day. The only other thing that I might add is remember why you decided to play in the first place. I have a feeling that it was to play music, other peoples and your own. Keep that in the front of your mind.
I had a martial arts instructor tell me once that if you do something, anything, with passion, you can't help but excel at it. Know what? He was right.
Good luck. Sooner than you realize, you'll be scorching the frets and your friends will be amazed.
