if you're willing to lay down the dough for it...ESP would be the best route to go.

might i also suggest looking into carvin guitars? maybe pick up a carvin catalogue or check out their webpage?
okay...my post is done...goodbye.

If you're looking for the absolute BEST in quality... Paul Reed Smith is basically the Pinnacle... but I'm not a fan. ESP's custom shop does look pretty sweet... or Jackson's Custom Shop. Look to drop about 3 or more grand though.

Don't overlook Schecter either. I whole heartedly agree about the PRS guitar's, as far as production guitar's go.

Tell us, just how much are you planning on saving? This would help out some.

In that case check out Ron Thorn for a custom built guitar specifically for you. It might take him a year to get it built for you, but it would defanately be worth it!

You can go to ESP and Jacksons websites and fill out a custom shop guitar quote.... and it will give you the quoted price. If I had 3-4 grand to spend, I wouldn't blow it all on one axe. I would spend it on a sweet amp (Mesa Triple Rectifier!!!!!!!) and I would build another guitar. But it's your perogative to spend it on what you want. I personally would rather get an ESP custom shop than a Jackson.... but that's just me...

The fact is... no one ever NEEDS 7 strings... What you need is an Ibanez, ESP, or Jackson. Those are the brands that generally offer Floyds as a Standard bridge type. Ibanez has a Wizard II neck profile on a lot of their guitars. It's a super fast style of neck. Neck through bodies generally have finished necks... this, in my opinion, can hinder speed. Unless you do what Zakk Wylde did to his Bullseye LP and have a tech sand off the finish on the neck then apply some oil to keep it from warping. The Ibanez prestige models are great axes... and they do have a neck through, Floyd-equipped, Wizard II Prestige neck, with a solid unfinished mapel neck. That's what I suggest. BUT... if you feel like you absolutly NEED 7 strings... I don't know why you need 7 strings... but if you do, just look around at some sites. Do your own research! www.musiciansfriend.com

Dean!

If M.A. Batio plays 'em, I suggest that they're a pretty good axe, given that this guy can afford to play anything!

Hmm... seems that Vai and Satriani are a tad "famous"... Ibanez players BTW. I sortta agree you CW. But if you’re in a position to buy any guitar at any price, as these dudes are you gotta wonder what drives their choices. Of course they get paid endorsement $$$, but these guys make a living as Guitar Slingers exclusively. My point being: they won't play on crap. Their rep is all they have.

If you buy a JS signature Ibanez (I lust after one of these) you are getting one fine instrument. I've fondled one of these (one does not merely hold a JS signature) oh, sweet!

For me, the dream machine is a Dean Caddy; I again -- fondled -- in a Fort Worth shop. Geez, I sound like a perv!

I guess if you ask 500 players “what’s the best?” you’ll get at least 200 different answers. Beauty is definitely in the hands of the player.

If money is not a constraint, I think all would agree that you can’t go wrong with any top end Iby, Fender, Gibson, Dean, Turner, etc. All played by the best slingers on the rock.

Helping put 3 kids through collage, I can only dream of owning any of the above. But I’m content enough with my ‘built-out” Mexi-Strat, and my new Epi/LP.

Another thing I think we can all agree on is that an expensive guitar will not make you a good player. I’ve been playing for almost 30 yrs and I’m about as good as I’m ever going to get. That’s reality – and age for you. I’m always learning new stuff, thus my support of this site. But other than learning some new licks, tricks, and building on my repertoire, I know for a fact that $2000 or $5000 spent on a guitar (for me anyway) will yield only differences in tonality not function.

I think its good to have a really nice guitars at some point and have it on a stand in your room so you can always see it and you will want to just pick it up and play it because it looks feels and sounds so good. I'm not saying it will make you a better player but it helps only because you'd be playing more not because of what its made of or the shape. Think about it would you rather play a crappy guitar from like radio shack or a really high end jackson, ibanez, ESP,PRS or Dean etc.

Most people spend a large amount of money for the quality of the guitar... the sound... and the feel not because it looks pretty. More expensive guitars are built better and have better tones. That's why they're expensive. But if you're like me, you can take 500-600 dollars and just build your own... haha
