Speed is a tool in a guitarists box...

Is that with strict alternate picking(not much arm movement, just thumb, index finger and wrist)or tremolo picking(or 'shredding').

Gongrats either way....unless it downstrokes....then you should make sure your actually human.

Yes. Gongrats. Do you know what you're going to do with your speed capabilities now?

Yeah dude thats pretty good if you've only been playing for a year, but try to get really really difficult runs up to moderate tempos- thats better than some easy chromatic thing at 140 bpm, but I was about 16ths at 140 after a year, now I've been taking things alot more seriously and i've been able to- on a good day play a 16ths chromatic run at 190- 200 bpm
Alas for I am Jay! Reviver of very, very old threads!

i was able to do it on a string skipping exercise i found in the internet. i was able to do the intro of cliffs of dover at that speed. actually i can do it up to 165 bpm but that wouldnt be 100% accurate(i better stick with 100% accuracy)

i will check out racer x. but im more of dream theater, symphony x and eric johnson . stuff

Judging by your handle speed is important to the style of music you play, so keep it up and you'll be at 200bpm in no time;-) Just remember though, 99% of all shredders sound terrible because they just play scales as fast as they can without putting any thought into creating interesting melodic lead. If you've only been playing for a year then you should be able to teach yourself to play 'good shred' if you stay away from what most guys play (scales up and down with ill chosen bends). Not knocking fast playing, I'm into shred too;-) Best of luck!

yea actually, I stopped worrying about speed cause even if your a shredder, you dont really want to be the fastest one. Once you reach a plateau, I would stop trying to increase speed, and work on how to incorporate it with style and finess.

Don't post anymore until you can do 288. Otherwise, you are worthless.

Try to play a 16 thriplets(16th notes, groups 6) One methronome click & your 6 notes...it's very easy way, if you want counting how many notes you playing in a second(in my country - 95% guitarists think about it:^)) For example You will get a methronome at 100bps, it means that you play-10 notes in a second...(please don't push me:))
sorry for my clumsy english

So does tapping count when you guys are competing for speed?
Or is it alternate picking only.

Depends, If you trill tap like Van Halen, ect. Then I guess that is shred. That video of you reciting Shakespeare while tapping, IMO consider shred. But alternate picking, I consider the defintion of shred. Cause legato is more fluid and you have to actually see it performed to see how fast its being played.

thats insane...

shredding meaning modifying a particular scale to your own style? hmm... yea i try to gain more speed while i do scales as well...so far not good... interesting i might just try that...

I was obsessed with playing fast a few years ago, and just sat and ran exercises for a couple of hours a day with a metronome. After 4 or 5 months I was able to play 16th notes pretty clean at about 220 bpm, which is where I topped out.....Can't do that anymore b/c I got bored doing it and don't practice it anymore.
Check out my band:
