Hey I'm new to the site and new to guitars. I been listening to this track I heard and been in love with it since. Finally decided to pick up a guitar and learn it, but I have no idea what I'm doing. I can't read tablatures, i cant read music, i cant everything blah blah. I'm a bit old to start learning now I think, but I still want to do it. I'm 23 gong on 24 now so by the time I'm good I'll be 50 if that! There's no guitar lesson schools around my area that I know of so it sucks.

I need to learn how to tune a guitar. I tried using the electric tuner, but man it doesnt sound anything like its suppose to. I must be doing something wrong. I strummed the strings so that the lights would be where its suppose to be in the tuner, but it still don't sound like the guy on the video i saw! :(

Well anyway, hopefully I learn a lot here.

Thanks
Andy

Plug in the tuner, hold the first 5 strings (adgbe) starting from the high e, Take your pick and pluck the open 6th string or low e. On most tuners you have to get the needle in the middle, check your manual if your not sure. After getting the E string tuned to e, your ready to go. After that you can either use the tuner or your ears. From big to small the strings are tuned to eadgbe. To do it by ear, hold down the 5th fret 6th string, pluck that then pluck the open 5th string, make the sounds sound exactly the same. Make sure you hear little ringing and more solid tone when plucking the string together. After that do the same for every other string. 5th fret 5th string, open 4th. 4th string open 3rd. Now when tuning the 2nd string its different, hold down the 3rd string 4th fret. Then 2nd string fith fret to finish, as for tabs, go here and click next, its in the lesson set, go through the set though. .
Hope this helps. GL

Welcome to the site. Keep at it and in time all your problems will get ironed out (or else turn into different problems). Either way you'll get a sense of accomplishment :D

Welcome!! Don't worry about starting in your twentys. Use the lessons here at GT, practice, learn from other guitar players and before you know it; you will be having more fun than humans should be allowed. Don't get discouraged when you hit the plateau that all of us have to work thru at times. Breakthrus WILL happen. Good luck!!

I exclusively use a tuning fork to tune my A string to (they make them for other notes too). They're cheap, reliable, don't need batteries, and work for my acoustics too. I hate those pitch pipe things though. I also sometimes use a cd with a known tuning to use as a reference, preferably a song in a key of an open bass string to tune while picking.

Tuning fork? My package came with a buncha stuff...L wrench even? But I don't know what they're for. Think they're for tuning?

And thanks everyone Ill keep trying. I started playing some tunes, learned how to read tabs a lil. Started playing that 2 songs that was in that other forum at Talk@philmusic link and it helped me out a lot. I learned that u cant just read and learn, you gotta listen too! I learned some, but rythm should come soon.

Anyhow thanks for the greetings. :)

Here's a picture of one. Your hit it and then place the bottom on a hard surface and it resonates a tone. The allen wrench is either for your neck rod (don't go turning this just to see what happens), or perhaps to raise/lower your action (string height) on your bridge saddles.

welcome to the site!!!

Funny, I had the same feeling. I am 29 years old and I just started a month ago. I didnt't feel old until I picked up a guitar and I though "I should have learn this 15 years ago"
Keep smiling, it makes people wonder what you're up to

there are quite a few people on these message boards that are older then you. so don't worry about it! I've heard stories of people picking up a guitar for the first time when they are 70. so don't feel like you can't learn just cause you are in your 20's
