I exclusively use a tuning fork to tune my A string to (they make them for other notes too). They're cheap, reliable, don't need batteries, and work for my acoustics too. I hate those pitch pipe things though. I also sometimes use a cd with a known tuning to use as a reference, preferably a song in a key of an open bass string to tune while picking.
