gday great site you guys

any thing you can suggest on speed and dexterity in my fingers for playing would be great.

i got theat fretboard master and i found myself just saying the notes and counting the frets to get it rather than memorising it.
practice i spose.

thanx guys

There are a ton of exercises out there...heres my fav though. It involves all four fingers and while it can get boring it DOES get results.

E-----------------------------------------1-2-3-4
B---------------------------------1-2-3-4--------
G-------------------------1-2-3-4----------------
D-----------------1-2-3-4------------------------
A---------1-2-3-4--------------------------------
E-1-2-3-4----------------------------------------

E-3-2-1------------------------------------------
B-------4-3-2-1----------------------------------
G---------------4-3-2-1--------------------------
D------------------------4-3-2-1-----------------
A--------------------------------4-3-2-1---------
E----------------------------------------4-3-2-1-

Simple but effective. Then do it on the next fret.keep going until your do it at the 12th or 15th fret. Then do it in reverse(ascending 4-3-2-1 and descending 1-2-3-4 for example)

Also in the same fashion try ascending 1-3-2-4 and descending 4-2-3-1.

Whatever feels difficult on your fingers, keep at it and alternate pick.A metronome will help keep track of your progress if you write down your current 'speed limit' and break it.

Good luck! You'll be flying in no time!
Try once,fail twice...

I recently started playing scales, just figuring starting with a note and wiguring out the rest. Sat down one night with that metronome online and just worked on speed. Started off slow.....and about 2 hours later I was playing eighth notes comftorably at about 152 bpm (2 notes per beat). Not only does playing scales help with building speed, but its a great way to learn your way around the fretboard.

I should've listed the original posting of that finger exercise as coming from chucklivesoninmyheart. My computer etiquette leaves something to be desired. Sorry.............................

totally normal, you are developing callouses, these are essential for playing, they will eventually build up and you will play pain free, just keep practicing, keep the practicing going and they will develop faster. but don't over do it, if they really start to hurt take it easy, focus on your picking hand and pluck an arpeggio and rest your fretting hand for a little.

I have a 6 string electric and a 6 string acustic, wanna get a 12 string acu. though. I've only been playing for about 2 years, just progressed very well, i'm a fast learner.

This lesson should get you started. Stick to the fingering pattern or it's worthless. For more melodic practice, I'd suggest just practicing chords that span 3 frets, while trying to transition smoothly.

IM trying to play it but my fingers wont even spread apart that far by themselves. will it get easier just by trying are and i doing something horribly wrong?

one more thing! is it even necessary to pick the string while doing this exercise? I mean my fingers are still stretching right? because i do this while watching tv and it gets annoying hearing the damn string while your trying to watch a movie.

Yep that lesson's 2nd 1/2 is especially tough, so stick to the 1st if you can do it (slowly as necessary to keep it clean). Truthfully I didn't have that lesson starting out, so my exercise was the general blues boogie:

Play each part twice through. Start out fretting the A string 2nd fret with your index finger, while continuing to hold it, fret the next note (4th fret) with ring finger...then 5th fret with pinky. For parts 2 and 3, you'll have to use your index to hold the fretted E string, ring for fretted A string, & pinky for the 9,10, & 11, 12 stretches.

E|--------Part 1----------------|----------Part 2---------------------|
B|------------------------------|------------------------------------|
G|------------------------------|------------------------------------|
D|------------------------------|------------------------------------|
A|-2--2----4--4----5--5----4--4|-7--7----9--9----10-10----9--9-----|
E|-0--0----0--0----0--0----0--0|-5--5----5--5-----5--5-----5--5----|

Then play Part 1 two more times, then take the same formation but slide it up on the 7th fret stretching to the 11th and 12th frets as above. Then back to part 2...You'll know how it's supposed to go as you play it (everyone's heard some form of this progression). Give it a shuffle feel, with a downstroke and upstroke. It's as basic as it gets.

Here's one of my lessons that may help in stretching your fingers out.
