I recently started playing scales, just figuring starting with a note and wiguring out the rest. Sat down one night with that metronome online and just worked on speed. Started off slow.....and about 2 hours later I was playing eighth notes comftorably at about 152 bpm (2 notes per beat). Not only does playing scales help with building speed, but its a great way to learn your way around the fretboard.
