Just wondering how much ya'll think where you're from affects how you play? For instance, some of my favorite players (B. Gibbons, S.R.V., and Dimebag Darrell) play with an uncertain grit, style, and energy just attributed to their being Texans. Take Jimmy Page...he loved American blues and early rock, but his playing was still genuinely British in some way. Do you think its inevitable to sound like where you're from, or you can learn and practice your way into any style and form?

Neither. I think it depends on the people you LEARN guitar from, be it instructors or learning the songs of other guitarists etc.

Hey Jolly, you've heard some of my music, is my style typical of Mississippi/the South?

In quite a few Kenyan high schools, various foreign languages (mainly French and German, with some Spanish here and there) are taught. Some schools, like my almer mater (that's the correct term, right) have expatriate teachers, and others have "indigenous" kenyans who have learnt the languages. Now, those taught by ex pat teachers generally have better pronounciation and diction, owing to the obvious mother tongue influences. In fact, a German visiting from Germany could tell, by listening to us, that our teacher is from this or that place (they have accents in Germany too). I guess if you're taught English by an Brit, you'll likely develop a British accent. That accent will definately get corrupted if you go back home to Nigeria or Uzbekistan.
I bet that music being a language too, that's how it works with guitar.

Here in the "Land of Enchantment" where we have two very strong musical traditions. The Hispanic dudes incorporate lots of Mexican licks. Gringos,
throw in country vibe. Both are playing BLUES. New Mexico has a vibrant
scene In all the arts, Not quite as hard edged as the coasts but very unique.
Ya'll come see us sometime!

Oh yeah? No ****.

anyone that understands psychology could tell you that it's not nature vs. nature, it's nature via nurture. Where you are from doesn't automatically give you a pre-determined course of life, and make you sound a certain way. That's ridiculous.

WHere you are from !!!

I spent 18 years in Newcastle, 12 in London and 5 in Iowa.

I guess that makes me a coal mining, ship building soft southern git who regularly beats him self up in-between eating steaks the size of his head and getting hit by tornadoes !

Yikes !
