well do i have some good news

hi people,as from my earlier thread i just got an electric guitar.woo me. Its a fender fat strat metallic sage. My question is... i want to switch the pick ups..sooner or later... i want a type of classic rock(van halen,iron maiden,acdc etc),hendrix sound. Any suggestions?

well for that u mite wanna try some sg pickups... but i dont do this much so i dont know if u can put humbuckers on a strat.....
o well...

Actually, Iron Maiden used single coils in their fenders...I'm not sure exactly what type... www.ironmaiden.com probably have a gear listing there.

Before you chop up a valuable strat, you should try using your amp settings to attain different artists sound. I am a huge fan of ac/dc and play at least 5 songs. try this amp setting for the old "angus young" rock:vol 8,gain 4,bass 2,middle 2, trebble 3 or 4. Angus young never used much distortion, just enough to make the sound cut when he would break into a solo. As you mentioned about hendrix, his strat was standard but he used a lot of effects. peddles and amp-wise.

Urrmm Im not really very sure about that !!

Im not sure a fuzz face and a wah wah pedal fed strait into a desk equals loads of effects. Or a wha into a Marshal Plexy turned up to ten (no master volume in those days).

It wasn't like Jimi could just hop on the internet and order a GNX4 !

I HATE the super slinkies. I just use the cheap Darco ones, nice tone and feel. Except right now I've got on some extra lights and they're pitiful. Does anyone else like the Darcos?

strings... I personnally haven't used very many different kinds of strings, but I've used ernie ball slinkies, light gauge, and hated them, I broke the high e string so often, then I moved to a heavy gauge GHS boomer... I did break the high e string on those too, but I replaced it with a leftover b string that I had from my ernie ball's... it's been working quite well... (the b string was an 11 on the ernie balls, the GHS boomers heavy high e was a 12!)

oh and by the way, I have this one guitar magazine that lists the 10 best ways to play like hendrix.... let me see if I can find it, then I'll list them for you.

1) Tune down one half step
2) Effects (vox wah-wah, Fuzz face distortion, Octavia, and Uni-vibe)

I have a Lonestar Fender (Hot Rod Series) with a "Pearly Gates" humbucker in the bridge position and I use a Johnson Millennium 150 I think the combination is great. I think the PG Humbucker would work for you it's the humbucker developed for Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) by Duncan Seymore.

ugg why does everybody love HB's? The strat sound is a staple of rock and roll. If you want to "shred" get HB's, but if you want to wail- stick with the good ol' single coils. But even still, amp modelling is so advanced now that you can make a guitar sound like almost anything. For the love of God do NOT chop up a strat to put HB's in it- if you do there was no point to getting a strat in the first place.

no beef btw to those of you who like HB's, but if you want that kinda sound, buy that kinda guitar. You can probably tell I'm a bit fanboy on Fender.

uh... i dont think i will chop up my guitar,since it is a fat strat and already has a humbucker so it should work but i want a more chunkier and classic rock sound. dunno :/ just my 2 cents..i guess

no doubt- I would look more toward effects than modding the instrument; for instance, if I really want crunch, I do have an ibanez stompbox that does that for me, so that's pretty helpful for me, but I really don't like chopping up instruments.

As people in the know would tell you (and I don't claim to be one of them, I only claim to be in the know that I don't know), the tone you produce with your guitar has a whole lot to do with your right hand technique (or left hand technique if you are left handed, d'oh!! :rolleyes: ). You may well be surprised to find out that alot of the players whose tone you adore didn't really have a lot of fancy "tone" equipment. I'm not saying amps don't matter, they obviously do, but just bear in mind that you contribute a lot more to your tone than just buying the right equipment.
