I'd have a pretty tough time saying that Jennifer Batten, Bonnie Raitt, Kaki King, Ani Difranco or any of the guitarists from 7 Year B*tch or Bottom don't (/a very unfortunate didn't) take their instrument seriously.

As do a number of women who I know from various local scenes.

I think there's a couple of different things going on here:

1). Guitar is a very male-dominated instrument and I think the issues associated with that tend to put a lot of otherwise serious female guitarists off.

2). Most women seem to care a lot less about technical, fast, mastubatory solos than men do. I think most women are more concerned with the song; the chord progression, the melody, rhythm, and lyrics. So, in other words, we're less likely to hear about their exploits unless they happen to front the band as well.

Of course, that doesn't necessarily they do any better of a job of those. Some do, but it's nowhere near a universal quality.

Of course. Just like us guys aren't necessarily any better at our fast, mastubatory solos (or even necessarily interested in them).

I'm just pointing out that your average female guitarist seems to look at the instrument differently than your average male.

I play the flute. Well, played. I didn't bring it to college.

You know, that's funny. The first time I ever mentioned guitar weight as an issue on this forum I was basically told to shut up and grow a pair. Are girls 'acceptably weak' or something now? I'm 5'7, 104 lbs. A heavy guitar will damage my back if I play for very long standing up. I've had all the muscles in my upper and middle back visibly go into violent spasms after playing a gig with a paul-type guitar. If I don't even have an excuse I don't see how your gf does.

wait are you a girl? cause if you're not... and you're 5'7" 104 lbs. then there is just something wrong with that... I'm 5'8" 165 lbs. and I'm not what one would consider fat either. just well built I guess.

anyways I think Ponyone brought up a good point... I think I learned a valuable lesson today. of course I'm blonde so it'll take me a minute or two to figure out what that lesson was... oh yeah... to encourage, not discourage, a girl who plays guitar... or tries to... maybe help her out if she needs it... yeah okay let's go with that answer.

a agree that we shouldnt make fun of girls for playing the guitar like you make fun of them then wonder why the crap they dont play.like it would be so awesome to see a girl play guitar and stick with it but most guy's drive them aay.were putting a bad image on are hobby.like even if a girl sucks at the guitar if you give her soem good comments she'll play ,more and event ually get really godd probally better than you.so i mean if i say any of the guy's making fun of the girls i would oput them straight cause i meant that's awesome that there trying something we put off as only a male thing.

That's not it. I'm talking about something years earlier. I had a different profile on here in early high school.

Just a point of curiousity 104 is light for my height. It's 20 pounds underweight from what's considered healthy. If I could gain weight I would, but I've never really been able to.

Sorry its true. Girls really are physically weaker then men. Why you think they not allowed in infantry. Anyways, my back is really strong, and still aches after playing with a les paul for a few hours.

well there is 2 options for gaining weight... one is eat more food in which case the weight you gain would be fat... or hit the gym in which case the weight you gain will be muscle, which will also help with the weight issue cause a heavy guitar will just feel lighter. with going to the gym though, more muscle means faster metabolism so you'd need to eat more food anyway. you wanna really gain weight? go to a health food store and pick up some like energy bars. then sit on your bed/couch and play guitar... don't actually use the energy you just ate.

Are you a doctor? Eating more food or hiting the gym will only make her metabolisma go up. Experts argue that obese people can't lose weight due to the same principles. Besides all of this, body fat ratio will not solve the to heavy of guitar problem.

Just sitting around and eating is what I do. I basically spend 90% of my time sitting down or asleep and I eat as much as I can whenever I can. It doesn't work.

I'm a guy, just so we're all on the same page here.

You definately need to pick up the curl bar then In my non-professional medical opinion. As a fan of fitness I suggest that you work out to muscle failure regularly. Eat alot of carbs about 1 hour before work out, and some carbs and alot of protien 1-2 hours after you work out. Don't forget to stretch (stretching get you results faster = less work in the long run.) Drink water like a horse (but don't forget to have salt in your diet or water will kill you.) I'm not very clear on this statisic, but if I am not mistaken you can gain around 6 pounds just from water weight. Also don't eat garbage like coke or pepsi or ice cream. Stop smoking and using drugs if you do. I'm not suggesting that you do.

For real? Interesting.

I hate lifting alone. It's alright if you've got a respectable amount of muscle mass, but I would just look like a p*ssy struggling with the weights.

i'm a girl guitarist who takes it seriously!
i've never had a problem with the weight of a guitar (even playing 3-4 hour practices), can play pretty much anything (currently in a van halen cover band and also playing quite a bit of vai), and am neither ugly, fat or gay. :D
its the guys who just assume that all girls cant play that are constantly giving me **** whenever i go into music shops. i always get called "love" or "sweetie" and asked if i can play "frere a jaqua"...
they're also the ones who look incredibly perturbed whenever i launch into eruption.

so dont assume that no girls can play or take it seriously!!!
