Hi
yesterday my treble humbucker died and I need to buy a new one, now I have a epiphone special model ( cheap les paul copy) and I´m thinking about getting some gibson humbuckers insted, the p-100 ( modern version of p-90) sounds interesting, and at the same time I'm looking towards the seymor and duncan mics.

I am interested in 2 different sounds, the first one is a clean sound suted for blues music, and the other is a lower sound, a real metal sound, mashugga is a favorit.

have anyone of you some experience with either of these mics or do you have any recomendations towards companys that makes humbuckers.

I recommend the DiMarzio Tone Zone. I have an identical pair of Yamaha SGB1000 guitars (what the Les Paul double-cutaway would be if Gibson had their **** together). One has a DiMarzio Tone Zone in the bridge position, and the other one has a DiMarzio Dual Sound (a 4-wire Super Distortion).

The Super Distortion is the sound you hear on just about anything recorded in the 70's. The 4-wire Dual Sound allows parallel connection of the coils for a hot single coil sound.

The Tone Zone has about the same output level, but the harmonics jump out more. When you're playing clean, this means that your sound cuts through the mix without overpowering the other players. Cranked, you get some delicious overtones on sustained notes, and changes in pick attack produce noticeably different kinds of grind. I think the word "expressive" suits it well.

Go to the DiMarzio website and look up the Tone Zone DP155. There are some very good wiring diagrams to explain the connection options for installing a 4-wire pickup. I use, and recommend, swapping out one of your control pots for a push-pull version with a DPDT switch, so you can select series or parallel coil connection. The benefits are explained there, so I won't go into it here.

Enjoy! :)

I have an Epi LP Standard with a Tone Zone on the bridge and a PAF Pro in the neck. The Tone Zone is really a great PU; has great gain, great harmonics and a fat nice tone. The PAF Pro is a warmer PU that could work for you for that bluesy, round sound in the neck, and nice warm clean tone, if that 's what you're after.

I just got to this web site:
http://www.seymourduncan.com/website/SDToneWizard/
and found it interesting.
So, any Seymour Duncan users here? We'd like to hear from you, guys.

I'm a duncan convert kinda...I like the JB/59 and JB/Jazz Configuration.For more output in the bridge,just slap in a Duncan SH-6(distortion).

Any idea how they compare with 50SR/neck and 60ST/bridge humbuckers on my Epi LP?

for that blues tone you could use the seymour duncan 59 model.

Ive got a dimarzio paf-pro in the neck and duncan custom (sh-5 maybe?) in the bridge. both sounds very good fo any kind of rock. both can be split to single coil but i dont split them very often so i cant really comment on the sound.

may i ask what the difference is between a passive pickup and an active in terms of sound????.
also, for a quality heavy metal sound what pickups/combos would be recommended?
Cheers!

Active pickup run off batteries and have higher output. They are best suited for heavy stuff. EMG pickups are active and are used by many metal guitarists (hammet and zakk wylde to name a few). i think a popular combination for EMGs is 81 in the bridge and 85 or 60 (?) in the neck.

I think that's a fair assessment. I play blues with it, because I play blues on all of my guitars, but I have the amp cranked enough to get some distortion happening.

IMHO Lawrence sound research makes the best pups for the price. Dime used to use them until he got big and then got endorsements .

are you srue your pickup died? I've heard that a very common problem with epiphones is that the pickup switch will die, I'm not sure how you could fix that, but I doubt your pickup is actually dead, you might wanna check all your wires first. of course, if I'm wrong and your pickup is actually dead, then you can just throw a hobo's bottle of booze at me.
