Relative to what ?
Stick 'em next to a PRS and yep they will suck.
Stick em next to a guitar in the same price range and they will probably do quite well.
I had a SS in the early / mid eighties and I thought it was the dogs bollox !

That depends...are u anygood or do u suck. Generally if ur any good they will probably suck.. however if your not anygood they wont. It an entry level guitar and u get what u pay for, i dont mind em, keeps ya humble.
WWSD? What would stevie do?

its thats what you play, i would suggest a Epiphone Les Paul. SG just arent as versitile unless your a true die hard ACDC. The epi will run u about 500 USD. Not quite sure about the SG but u can buy a real one for 800...(but i think it was used).

I don't like squire guitars much because of their pickups. They're decent while they work, but they tend to crap out on people.
Suckage is relative, as Dr. Simon pointed out. For their price they'll serve you well. Of course, you might find it worth the effort to save up the extra $$ to get a better guitar.
Another big thing is availability. Sometimes good deals pop up that make the squire seem very bad. For example, a couple years ago a pawnshop here sold an old (I think about '80) hand-made BC Rich in great condition for $250. I only had about $50 then so I wasn't able to get it.

Squiers can run the gamut, like pretty much any other guitar, in terms of sound and quality but that said, most of the Squiers I've played sound like crap and seem to have lots of electronics problems after a fairly short period of time; not really a problem if you're handy with a soldering iron but still a pain in the ass.
IMHO i'd look at something by Epi, or, if you're in the UK, an Aria is an excellent choice for a cheapish guitar (they're more common in the UK than the US). And yes like Ham said, hit up the pawn shops and used music stores... you'll probably get a better guitar for less $$$.
And really quick, many of the guitars on the Ebay page you linked are not real SG's, but cheap Korean/Chinese knockoffs that are of indeterminate quality. I'd stay away. And the real Gibson ones that are up are in many cases still a few days away from the auction ending... that 250 pounds will probably be up to 750-1500 before it's closed. in the US a vintage SG in good shape can run $650-10,000 depending on the specifics. my first electric was an Epi SG and while it did its job the neck joint cracked and tuning stability generally isn't as good as on other guitars.
ok............ Ill check out pawn shops
