Im thinking of getting one of these soon, I have played one in a shop , great guitar. But I heard when standing they are top heavy, meaning that you cant take your hand off the neck, otherwise the headstock will droop. (Ive notice James Hetfield seems to always have his hand on the neck even when not playing).

Does anyone own an explorer and if so what do you think?

Cheers

I used to have a Hondo Explorer in the mid 80s and its balance was fine.

If balance is a problem for you and you really like the guitar their are several things you could do to sort balance out (like using a fat finger ont he head stock, repositioning the strap button etc etc.

All explorers and similar shapes from other brands has that balancing problem ... I don't think that repositioning the strap button is a good idea , you'll just get used to it in a while.
There are lots of guys , famous or not , who play explorers exclusively ... The thing is that they just get used to it .
Some people play V shapes only too , and they're even comfortable when they play in sitting position .

If you like the guitar , get it.

People reposition strap buttons all the time, especially on Vs. The classic relocation is behind the neck joint.

It is what ever works for you !

Man, i just got rid of my explorer for that reason. Even with poistioning the strap somewhere else and what not, it was really bothersome. I loved how the guitar looked, but playing it got annoying and even painful for my wrist at times, dunno, maybe i just never got the hang of it. I personally wouldnt recommend it yet a lot of musicians like them.

my bc rich mockingbird has that same problem.. it blows.. so one day i moved the strap button to the neck plate and it made it a little better.. it does take getting used to though.. also.. a thicker strap helps and wearing the guitar higher helps too.. even if you look like an idiot.. thats how its supposed to be

another possibility is putting a high friction pad in the inside of the strap at an opportune point and that'll stop it from wandering about too much !
