New bedroom amp
My friend just reclaimed his line6 spider from me and now its just me and my ancient Crate G10 which is possibly the worst amp ever created. Im looking for a new amp for bedroom levels (but i do play loud in the bedroom lol). Nothing too fancy, but tubes would be nice. 2 channels. ~$300 and used is no problem.

you could do worse than check out the Marshall MG15MSII.
It is a solid state amp however it doesn't sound bad.
It is a two channel amp but lacks a reverb/channel foot switch.
I counter this with an OD-20 stomp box /RV5 stomp box if I need to change channel with my feet.
The only other draw back is the emulated line out for recording which is a long way form brilliant. It does work just takes quite a bit of tweaking !
However for 270 UDS new it has a lot of bang for your buck and sounds pretty good. It is not a TSL100 or a Soldano however at a 10th of the price that is not surprising !

[font=trebuchet ms]If you're not in a big hurry, look on eBay for an old Ampeg G-18. This little fella is the best-sounding transistor amp I've ever heard! At 10 Watts into an 8" speaker, it won't blow the walls down, and it has tone to spare. Two inputs share a single channel, with no built in effects - just bass and treble eq controls. I took a pair to a jam last night, and everybody was seriously impressed by them. The best part is, they usually go for under $100US including shipping! :D I liked my first one so much that I have two of them now.[/font]

Yea that's more along the lines of what im looking for. The only problem is that its single channel. Anybody tried the Marshall DSL 201? Its the 20 watt combo.

I tried the solid state / tube hybrid Marshalls, I owned one (VS65R) and thought it sounded terrible (I think I prefer my little MG) !
IMHO The TSL is a totally different beast and even with stock tube sounds very sweet !! It dosn't like my Jackson (with out a boost) however the LP, strats and the PRS are super sweet. I think of all of them the Strats sound the nicest !

To tell you the truth, i really wasn't impressed with the spider. Its a huge step up from what im now left with, but i found it terribly hard to get get good sounds from it. How is the Spider II different than the original ones?

Man, If you haven`t tried a SpiderII I suggest you drop what you are doing and run to your nearest store (even if it is with your pants around your ankles) and try the 12" 70 watt amp.
It is bigger than you want, but goes for 299USD(I think) and has many more features than the 3owtt aversion.
The SpiderII`s are about (roughly) 679832 times better than the Spiders. Although I dont own 1,I would sell my Laney vc50(full tube) to buy one, If I had not just ordered a Pod XT Live.
Those amps are incredible...I promise you that if you try it out, you will buy it...especially cool sounds are made by the INSANE setting (both green and red)
Give it a shot.

Personally ..i like the peaveys...one in every price range... one does every sound.. good investment for practicing... I live in Canada so maybe it's different where you people are?

I play the Spider II 150W head through a full stack, and would definitely look into playing the lower versions if i were looking to replace my Crate writing amp. Go try it .... I traded in my Marshall AVT 150 head for it (and some other stuff) for having amazingly shoddy quality (I WILL NOT play Marshall from this day forth) and haven't been disappointed. Then again, my axe is a Jem, so everything sounds better than usual to me
