OK Gang,

Having searched metronomes....

I have been working on the solo from Crazy Train (I know I am a clichƩ !) and I have it down at ...wate for it 108 bpm. As some of you will know this is really not a difficult solo it is just quite fast.

Now I'm not really a metal head in the shredding sense and I was wonder what sort of metronome regime (like what pattern of increments) is going to get me up to 140 the fastest (bad pun I know).

Thanks

I always go in increments of 5, but it depends on how well you know the solo. If your fingers seem to play themselves at 108. After a few practices, you may be able to boost up to 120 for alittle bit of a challenge. But I would suggest boosting to the point, where you still have control of what your playing. What I mean is your not pushing yourself to reach the speed, you know exactly what your playing. You should be comfortable, you'll learn faster if you are. Plus you won't get sloppy, and your connection with the guitar will be alot better when you go on to attempt difficult stuff. Be patient brah.

BTW congrats on getting Host.

Just curious, what's the tempo of the song where the solo(s) are? Are you trying to play it faster than Randy?

i learned that solo about a year ago, and it gave me a hard time for a while. ( i don't learn very many solos note for note) i practiced it ridiculously slow, and concentrated on note clarity instead of speed, and it seemed to help. i also practiced it on the acoustic, but for that i had to move the whole thing down two or three whole steps (i don't have a cut away)
then attempt to play it with the album to note progress/rough spots. i don't know if this is considered good advice, but it helped me.

It is not difficult, just faster than I am used to. It also requires techniques that I don't normally use like whammeing whilst playing those hammery trills at the the 14th to 21st fret and moving out of 3 finger tapping. Not a biggy but practicing these areas (where I know Im week) are the reasons I am doing it !!

"Crazy Train" and "Mr. Crowley" were my training manuals in legato shred. Once you learn those, most of the other stuff that has the same techniques become extremely easy to play.

The thing I love about the song is that their is so much to it.

The fills are harder than the solo !

Especially that little run at about 1 min 20 !

I just about have it down now however their is still room for improvement !

i have a question about metronomes.
i've been using one for quite a while now, but was never instructed on how to, and have devised my own methods of drilling scales etc. with one. three notes per click , four , eight, odd groupings etc.
my question is this. does each click represent a measure? if you are playing sixteenth notes, are you playing sixteen notes in between each click?
i've heard mention of sixteenth notes at one twenty bpm, and if this is the case, then maybe i need to stick with slow and soulful blues (lol)
seriously, though, rather than just practicing note groupings, i'd like to be more aware of what type of notes i'm playing, and know exactly what terms to use for what i'm playing.

Without a time signature, "sixteenth notes at 120 bpm" is meaningless. If one assumed 4/4 time, that means that there are four clicks per bar, and a 1/4 note = 1 beat. This would give four 1/16 notes per beat. 120 beats per minute is 2 beats per second, or eight 1/16 notes per second.

.. and back in the 70's Johnny Winter was playing his Texas blues at least that fast!

whew! ok, that i can handle. that makes sense to me.
the person that made that statement was kind of bragging, and maybe they didn't know how to say what they meant, or were counting on me not knowing exacly what they were talking about. that cleared a lot up for me.
thanks!
funny you should mention johnny winter, one of my favorites.
soulful, maybe , but slow? not. :D
i have a handful of tapes from him, including him covering a good handful of songs. and believe it of not, i heard a lot of fast stuff in there that sounds a LOT like stevie ray vahn (sorry don't know the spelling) licks. but only on certian albums.
no, that's shreddin' the blues :D

reduce the speed to a tempo you are comfortable with and build up gradually

Why, does it look like me?

Nah, it's just some guy whose picture I found when I did a Google on "scream". I figured I'd already gone the Edvard Munch way, so I'd throw in a little variety lest someone accuse me of being a one-joke pony.

Wait a se--
