i've heard mention of sixteenth notes at one twenty bpm, and if this is the case, then maybe i need to stick with slow and soulful blues (lol)...
Without a time signature, "sixteenth notes at 120 bpm" is meaningless. If one assumed 4/4 time, that means that there are four clicks per bar, and a 1/4 note = 1 beat. This would give four 1/16 notes per beat. 120 beats per minute is 2 beats per second, or eight 1/16 notes per second.

.. and back in the 70's Johnny Winter was playing his Texas blues at least that fast!
