Hello again, I'm just curious to know what is the most difficult song you guys can manage to play properly or attemp without to many mistakes. From I know since I started last November, I would say Joe Satriani's stuff and Dream Theater's compositions are quite difficult to master. What do you guys think?

P.S. Btw, Liquid Tension Experiment is very difficult for me, especially their song, Acid Rain.

Hmmm, what would be the hardest thing for me to imagine playing? Well, I'd say 2112 by Rush, hehe.

You've been playing 8 months and you can play LTE's acid rain? That's pretty frickin' impressive. It's got some hard runs (like around the 2 and 4 minute marks)
"You must stab him in the heart with the Bone Saber of Zumacalis... well, you could stab him in the head or the lungs, too... and the saber, it probably doesn't have to be bone, just anything sharp lying around the house... you could poke him with a pillow and kill him."

Is it impressive?? I guess, some people tell me I progress much faster than other guitarrists I know in my school, I mean, yea I can play most of it, but it's extremely difficult. The most difficult stuff I can play is mostly DT since it's my fav. The stuff I can play from their work is:

Metropolis
Learning to Live
A Change of Seasons
You Not Me
Pull Me Under
Take the Time
Under a Glass Moon
Acid Rain-most of it
Overture 1928
The Dance of Eternity
Scarred
The Ytse Jam
The Glass Prison
As I am
This Dying Soul
Honor Thy Father
Stream of Consciousness
In the Name of God
The Killing Hand
and Afterlife

I've can play those songs completely unless noted. The rest of the stuff I play is Metallica. I'm not very broad on bands, because I like to play everything from that band, then move to another band. I'm not trying to brag, which I hate, just pointing out what I can play and do. Plus I can pick a single 16th note at 208 BPM, I dunno if that's really tough to do, but I can also do long arpeggio runs at 16th notes at 208 BPM. I dunno if it's tough, but i've measured myself with a metronome, but then again, I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure about the 16th at 208 BPM.

EDIT: sorry Acid Rain isn't from DT, it's from LTE, I accidentally put it as a DT song.

That's quite a list for an 8-monther !
I usualy don't recomend these for beginners , but since you can already play Petrucci's , you must try Michael Angelo's "Speed Kills" , Jason Becker "altitudes" & "Serrana" ... You'll notice a giant leap in your technique after finishing those.

Hahaha, yea I practice a lot every day, roughly 6-8 hours a day. :D
Are those songs or lessons? I'm interested.. If you could tell me where to find them then I would highly appreciate it. Thanks!

They're solo guitar tracks , like satriani & vai.
However , Michael Angelo's instructional video is also called "speed kills" and it has that song in.

You can find tabs on www.mysongbook.com and www.powertabs.net , but you'll need a software for each to view the tabs format , or if you search yahoo or google you could find them in text files.

Either buy the CDs , or check them out from the net first if you have a file sharing software or something.

Damn that altitude-song kicks ass..!

I think i could manage it with a little practise, and i've been playing for 4 years.

I don't usually learn songs per se.... I used to... I can play all that Randy Rhoads stuff... a bunch of Satch and Vai...

I don't really like shred too much so I never really got into that aspect of playing.... I'm sure I could learn it.... but I'm not motivated enough to learn something I don't like to listen to...

The most difficult thing you ask? soloing on any of Charlie Parker's songs... I mean it may seem easy to fly up and down scale patterns... but usually that's all in the same key, maybe some chromatics thrown in for color... On the other hand... try playing at just a little bit slower than just full out shred.... 'cept change keys every few bars and using exotic scales... PLUS trying to make it sound melodic... PLUS playing over chords like 9ths, 11ths, 6ths, m7b5, ALT., +7, #9, b9 and a whole bunch more that'll come up, instead of playing over simple power chords or guitar riffs or minor/major!

Ya, I'd say that's the most difficult thing that I'm learning to do. But that Ican play? Lots of acoustic shred, like Al di meola and John Mclauglin inspired stuff.
There are only two important things in life - There's music and theres girls, not necessarily in that order....

I play alot of Hammet's stuff, I can play most of the Master of Puppets CD, some off the Ride the Lightning, Seek and Destroy and Four Horseman off of Kill em All, and alot from Metallica's other CDs. I can also play several Iron Maiden songs. The most difficult I've learned so far I'd say... well. I'm not sure. After so much practicing they all seem easy. :P

Nothing Else Matters was one of the first 5 songs I ever learned. I can play Fade to Black - Intro solo, interlude, and end solo. I can also play one - Intro solo, interlude, and end solo. Lol... I can play Master of Puppets solos and interlude as well. I typically study a song so long in one sitting that I never have to read the tabs again.

I can play The Great Debate, and about 10 songs off that list gus. Satches stuff is hard because his fingers move so rapidly, and he kin dof rolls his notes into one another, he has some hardcore legato. But really I have to agree with ace, Shredding is not an aspect of guitar where i think, "This guy Can't be good, he doesn't have as much speed as so and so". I actually think Alex Lifeson's stuff is real hard to do, he has a wierd style of playing.

But if you want me to list some songs i Can play.

Satch - The Extremist
Satch - Satch boogie
Dream Theater - Learning to Live
Dream Theater - Lines in The Sand
Rush - La Villa Strangiato
Rush - The Trees ( I love that Intro.)

But what i mostly do all day is play to backing Tracks and just jam. Or i make up my own music. When i was about 9 years old i could play Over The Hills and far away, ( Zepp) and Silent Lucidity ( QR). So I also have learned very quick, but through lots of practice.

I wanted to correct someone talking about michael angelo. His song on the speed kills video os called "No Boundaries" not Speed Kills. And if you shred check out Rusty Cooley, in my opinion he's better than Michael Angelo.

Has anyone ever tried to tackle Beethoven's "Pathetique" Sonata on classical guitar? Now THAT is a difficult song, even on piano!
