double tapping
hi. wen i double tap i always find tht it is much quieter then wen i pick, making the double tapping sound tame. Is there any good technique to get around this or do i just have to tap harder

I know what youre talking about and chances are that either, A: your pickups arent hot enough, ie. Single coils or B: you dont have enough overdrive going through it

If you have a multi-effect pedal , turn the compressor on ... This will even out the volume level of the notes you play (depending on your settings of course).
You may also be needing extra strength in your fingers , so practice more.

I know what your talking about. Even with all the distortion and effects, two handed tapping does sound kind of muted out. Dont worry, its soposed to be like that. Not enough pressure is added to to string when you just press down than when you pick.

I've got a 50 page tutorial on tapping on my instruction page if that helps any.
Some of the exercises should help build your strength and there's a ton of tips on setup that should help.

Thanx guys. Unfortunately i dont have any pedals, actually my gear is very basic. So until i upgrade i'll just work on my finger strength. Do u reckon workin on my finger strength will ever get it load enough? I tried lookin into the tutorial on double tapping but becos it was so big i found it hard 2 find the information i need :p but i'll have another gander through it. Peace

Hell, it's not hard. Just take it one step at a time. The first chapter is mainly beginner stuff. Once you learn the first ten pages, the rest are easy cause they all use the same techniques.
If you want a good one to start on that sounds really difficult but is easy as hell to play try the 'MultiBar' tap. Once you have that one, you can transpose it to just about any key, and 99% of the other taps use concepts that you learn from just that one technique.
At the very least, learn the vasic Van Halen descending tap.
Just remember that tapping is like learning guitar all over again... you've gotta train your right hand the same way you trained your left so think of how difficult it was when you first started playing guitar and you'll get the idea.
And don't be afraid to use the hair braid thingy.... I have one on both my guitars and use em constantly even when I'm not tapping cause it cleans up the open strings and mutes em when you're not recording.

schmange i looked at your turtorial and found the bit that would answer my question. You said you use a compression to equal out the volume of the notes. Unfortunately i dont have a compressor pedal. But i will keep on lookin through your article the exercises and other interestin stuff in there. Thanx
But wat i did find helpful was workin on my pull-offs. Perfecting them and making them harder seemd to make it considerablely louder.

Think of your right hand as the way you did when you first started learning guitar.
All that time it takes to get your left had used to doing bends, pull-offs and hammer ons etc... you have to train your right hand to do the same thing.
So it's almost like starting over again.
Another thing to take seriously is the hair band/braid thing I mention in the beginning lessons. Most guys will say stupid things like "it's cheating" or whatever, but seriously, I use it all the time to mute the strings...even when you're doing leads or acoustic leads in the studio.... put the hair braid thing over the strings and you'll get a much cleaner sound. Just keep in mind that if you have to play open strings, you either have to punch in or remove it temporarily while you play the open strings, then slide it back up for the rest of either your leads or your tapping.
Try these tunes. Each one of em I used a hair braid to mute the unplayed strings.
