No Frills Practice Routine

 

If you're a beginner guitarist looking for a simple, effective practice routine, you're in the right place! Learning the guitar doesn't have to be overwhelming, and with a few basic steps, you can improve quickly while having fun.

Start by mastering a few essential chords. Begin with the A major chord, which is the foundation of so many songs. You can play it by pressing your index on the second fret of the D string, your middle finger on the second fret of the G string, and your ring finger on the second fret of the B string. You could also try barring the second fret across those strings for a simpler option. Once you're comfortable with A, move on to the D major chord, which you can play by pressing your index on the second fret of the G string and your ring finger on the third fret of the B string. Lastly, try the E7 chord, which is great for blues and other genres. The E7 requires just a slight modification of the regular E chord, making it an easy transition.

Next, add some scales to your practice. The minor pentatonic scale is a must-know for beginners and is widely used in rock, blues, and pop. Practice it by starting on the fifth fret and using your index and pinky fingers to hit the notes on the E and A strings. Once you're comfortable with that, learn the major scale in C, which is a seven-note scale that forms the basis of much of the music you'll play.
