Go From Beginner to Intermediate

If you’ve been playing guitar for 2–3 years, you might be wondering, “Am I still a beginner, or have I reached the next level?” It’s not always an easy question to answer, but here are three big indicators that you’ve stepped into intermediate territory.

1. Chord Switching with Ease

One major sign of progress is being able to switch between chords smoothly. If you’ve mastered open chords and moved on to bar chords (like those rooted on the low E and A strings), that’s a good start. Going further, exploring smaller chord shapes and starting to learn the CAGED system shows that you’re advancing. The CAGED system allows you to play chords, scales, and progressions all over the neck, opening up new creative possibilities.

2. Comfort with Timing and Rhythm

Timing is everything. At the intermediate level, you should feel comfortable with different note durations, like whole, half, and sixteenth notes, and handle various strumming patterns without breaking rhythm. No more pausing to land a chord mid-strum! You should also confidently switch between time signatures, like 4/4 and 3/4, and differentiate between straight and swing feels.

3. Playing Full Songs with Expression

Being able to play an entire song from start to finish, transitioning smoothly between sections like verses and choruses, is another hallmark of intermediate skill. Adding expressive techniques like slides, bends, vibrato, and palm muting—and using dynamics to play soft or loud—brings your music to life.

Finally, true progress shows when you can perform under pressure, whether it’s at a jam, an open mic, or just in front of friends. That’s when your skills truly shine!
