At the same time bands and artists like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and many others made the style of rock known as "heavy metal" or just "metal" popular on the mainstream scene. So as you can hear there's a lot to dig into - both technically and stylistically - since so much development happened in this decade.
