In this tutorial we're going to learn how to play "Cat's in the Cradle" as performed by Harry Chapin. This folk music classic is a staple in acoustic guitar playing and songwriting. I am going to break down for you how to play that signature riff, along with how to play the song using open chords with your capo on the first fret.

On the original recording, all the guitar parts are played with the capo on the 8th fret. To make it so you can play this song both solo and with a full band, we are going to play the entire song with our capo on the first fret. Make sure you have your guitar tuned to the notes with the capo on (F, Bb, Eb, Ab, C, and F), and pay attention that your capo is close to the bottom of the fret and is on straight.

The song is in the key of F major, in 4/4 time with a few bars of 3/4, and at 78 bpm.
