Description

In this tutorial you will learn to visualize and play the minor scale in the multiple patterns and positions it forms on the guitar fretboard. We will start with the A minor scale as an example and eventually play the minor scale in all 12 keys.

It is possible to play the same note in more than one place on the guitar. So guitarists must take the time to carefully map out all these possibilities. This is important because it can help us find the most efficient way to play any given series of notes. It is also important because each pattern has its own unique timbre (quality of sound). For example, playing a note on a lower string typically creates a rounder sound with more low end bass, while a note on a higher string has a brighter sound with more high end treble. Also, notes played on wound strings sound very different than notes played on unwound strings.

It is good to know these things and be able to effectively and competently deal with them.

There are three primary patterns that the scale forms that will learn in this tutorial. We'll practice each with a backing track. Then we'll apply it across the fretboard to play in all 12 minor keys.
