As always before we start digging into all the playing, let's briefly talk about the gear and tone that I'll be using for these examples.
I'll be using my good old Telecaster on the bridge pickup going straight into a modeled version of a small Fender amp with a little bit of reverb added. For this sound I like to roll of just a little bit of “tone†on my tone knob back here. That gives me a little bit smoother of a tone and the parts tend to stay a little more in the background that way. If you roll off too much it'll sound like someone rolled a big couch in front of your amp and you'll disappear completely.
One important thing to mention is that it's less than ideal to do this on a guitar with any kind of a tremolo bar. The reason for this is that we'll be bending some strings while others remain static, and when you do this with a floating tail piece, the static notes are going to go a little bit flat when you bend the notes over them, because that pulls the floating tail piece. But you can absolutely do it, if that's all you have right now. It's just something to be aware of.
