The first verse has a one measure, single note pick-up over the V chord or E. The guitar plays a steady and constant pattern of (down up, up down up down up) over these chords: A minor, F, G and D and A minor, F, E, A minor.
Keep it steady but be careful not to overpower the vocals! The progression is in A minor with a borrowed D major for color. The third verse tags E and A minor.
