In this lesson, we'll look at the slide guitar part that occurs in the 1st verse. It is very simple but is particularly effective in brightening up the mix when the vocals singing the title of the song.

All that's going on here is we're going to play 3 chords on strings 2, 3, and 4. Remember, we're tuned to an open E major chord. E, B, E, G#, B, E. First thing we have to do is wait. Lay out for the first 4 bars and when you hear the lyric "I hear you knockin'", slide in from the 4th fret onto the 5th fret on strings 2, 3, and 4. Stay there and let the notes ring for 2 bars. Then, when your I hear "but you can't come in," slide from the 11th fret to the 12th fret on strings 2, 3, and 4. Now hold that for 2 bars.

Next, we'll repeat the 1st move from the 4th fret to the 5th fret and hold for two bars. Finally, we move up two frets and slide from the 6th fret to the 7th fret on stings 2 and 3 over the line "go back where you been." Hold that for 2 bars and then have kind of a noisy exit. This is more of a final gesture in the verse and not an exact move. Simply start on the 7th fret and do a quick slide both down the neck and off the fretboard.
