Now we have all three patterns basic patterns that contain are the exact same notes, but they are played on different frets and strings. This results in the three main possible patterns that the major scale forms on the guitar fretboard. Notice also the difference in timbre (the quality of sound) each pattern has from the other two.

We can continue to higher octaves and cover the fretboard with the major scale by using and combining these basic patterns in multiple ways.
