Definition for: Chromatic
Notes outside the key of a piece of music. In practice, any note is a chromatic note, but using them heavily risks the music become atonal. They are usually employed as passing notes within a solo or melody, which add color but aren't emphasized. This makes the melody more interesting, but doesn't detract from the tonal quality overall.
