Put the gain low and the level high, and play hard for the classic rock kinda sound.
For metal, do the opposite.

I have no experience with that particular pedal , but there are some general rules I like to apply when trying a new pedal :
Heavy Metal:
Gain: pretty high
Bass: over 5
Middle: below 5
Trebble: below 5 but higher than mids
Classic Rock:
Gain : Lower than heavy metal (you should be able to play a full chord, say Emin and be able to hear all notes clearly)
Bass : over 5
Middle : over 5
Trebble : below 5

Tweak it to your liking, you wouldn't destroy it anyway :)
Pedals have pots that might response differently depending on the taper type it uses. OK, there is this standard for volume or tone or whatever, but hey, in those DS-1 I mods, found some came with non std. So it looks like they trying to catch the standard amount of prduction in a day, so they might think, what the heck I'll just use this pot or something.
Just trust your own ear!!!
