I've been playing for around 2 1/2 years now and I feel that I've developed well. My approach to learning is pick a technique and focus on it until your perfect at it. Now is my turn to learn sweep picking! I'm finding it harder than anything else I've learnt, any ideas on making it easier? Thanks.

Or maybe not....

This had been on the board before, just have a look at a few weeks back and you should find some help there...

mmm. Search doesnt seem to be working at the moment. I know that i did write a load of stuff in a thread a while back about sweep picking.
Luckily i find sweep picking quite easy. Best tip is, is to start really slow and keep getting faster. It worked for me ! But do try and use the search... you will find lots on sweep picking if it works.
By virtue of their electrical properties, tubes generate a special waveform when they're saturated, which is why tube engineering has tremendous tonal advantages over solid state or DSP solutions, particularly for crunch and lead sounds. Tubes enter the saturation zone gradually or softly, which lends tube-driven tone its trademark yet totally unique character.

I think being able to mute the strings when sweep picking is very very important. Without muting the strings it will sounds really bad and just sound like lots of noise. You can mute with your picking hand and as aiwass said you can also mute with your fretting hand which is what michael angelo does and many other good sweep pickers.
If you want to get good at sweep picking you should definatly check out michael angelos "speed kills" dvd. Its really useful because you get the tabs with it and it teaches you how to sweep pick as well as other stuff.

I think alternate picking is better than sweep to play fast with accentuations... ;)

Why?? O why do you people have the need to ask the same dam questions just in a different way
Heres a way to make it easier..HOW BOUT PRACTICING!!....but o wait that would be to obvious...there must be a easier way to get around the idea of practice...Put ur pick under the pillow and let the magic pick fairy come and the next day you will be flying through those arpeggios..Pffff
The answer will be practice for alost every question thats not theory related
This may seem like a mean post but i get tired of people asking the same quesitons on this forum all the time...IF they would practice more than they talk the just maybe....

That's not entirely true. Occasionally along comes a guitarist who doesn't know of a certain technique, such as me a while ago, and asks about the particulars of this technique. Hence, the point of a forum.

indeed - i know that it gets boring sometimes to see peeps obviously not capable of using a search engine or asking real life peeps first or simply asking plain stupid questions. however - this forum is a technique and style forum - so questions like those are ok - else we could ditch that board.

I know thats not entirely true that why I said "the answer will be practice for ALMOST every question"
But you will learn from your mistakes eventually...I learned to tap and sweep without anyone showing me how or watching any videos on how to sweep
I didnt have a clue what to do at first but i eventually learned with no assistance...And i believe he was asking about making it easier which can only be accomplished through good PRACTICE...there is no magic trick
Yes i know this is a technique forum but how many times can the same question be asked??? i guess alot
People should use search engines liek Azreal said

does anyone else find sweeping up or down easier or harder? I have an easier time sweeping back towards me, that towards the ground. Make sure you practice sweeping both ways, or you'll just get good at doing it in one direction.

someone mentioned right hand damping earlier, that's all very well on downstrokes but is it possible on upstrokes too?
If I couldn't laugh at myself how could I laugh at someone less ridiculous?

I wholeheartedly agree! I think that we should completely shut down this section of the forum, and, instead, when you click on "Technique & Style", a big pop-up window will come up and say "JUST PRACTICE DIMWIT".

Jon, can we get this in motion?
... and that's all I have to say about that.

Im not gonna get onto u because your a n00b to this site...You just obviously dont know how many times people ask the same question..How do i get fast? How do i sweep crazy arpegios really fast? Is there an easy way to get fast?
PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE AND MORE PRACTICE and that isnt obvious enough then maybe they werent meant to play guitar. That and I have to freedom on this forum to post my opinion and i know they have the freed to ask some of the dumbest and most obvious questions..if you dont like my opinion well....get over itI totally agree Iamtheggman...we need to make like a FAQ at the startup of the forum that asnwers all of these common questions so poeple dont have to ask them in posts
